Are you a golfer? When did it all begin for you? How were you attracted to this challenging, fun, rewarding, humiliating, game? Last Friday I posed the question to my Stableford playing mates. Jim Ehlers grew up in the Castro Valley area of California. Jim said his dad wasn’t really a golfer but had some clubs and got him interested in the game. “What are those? What do you do with them? “Jim began using them to bang the ball and still does. Scott Dietz grew up in Chicago. His father was not a golfer either but gave Scott a fiveiron which Scott used to punch a golf ball around the backyard. Scott was intrigued with the game and went on to play on his High School golf team and is signed up to play in the upcoming NCGA Zone Qualifier. Jim Ellis grew up in the Garberville area amongst the redwoods of Northern California. Jim’s father had a set of clubs but was not a golfer. The fathers of these three local golfers all got their sons interested in the game but none were themselves “golfers”. Jim played with his brother at the nine-hole Benbow course just down the road from Garberville. Once after a round with his brother, Jim was in a local grocery store that had a barrel of used golf clubs. Jim spotted a driver in the barrel and bought it for $45.00. Taking it back to his parents’ house overlooking the Eel River Jim teed up a ball took a mighty swing and watched the head of the driver fly off the club towards the river.

Wednesday the 1st of February ninety-year-old Butch Carlstadt eagled the sixth hole and shot an 86, four strokes under his age. Also, last Friday Phil Dunn got an eagle and a birdie with Garberville Jim Ellis sinking four birdies and Jim Ehlers scoring one bird. Nice guys. Someone’s gotta get us a 2023 hole-in-one.
