League play returns on February 14

- Rack ’em up,

Brian of Calistoga, and his wife Beata, came to Fort Bragg to visit with the notorious duo and Welcome Inn’s Team # 1 pool player Mathew and his wife, Jennifer. Actually, it was also to celebrate Brian’s 79th birthday and for relaxation, they came for the Welcome Inn Pool Tournament. Huh? Well, they didn’t say, can you imagine anything better than hanging at the Welcome Inn while it’s in full swing and loud Juke Box music is playing during a pool tournament? Well okay, rocketing to the space station would win out, but hardly anything else comes to mind. Brian hadn’t picked up a cue in over a year, and then admitted … He had sold his cue. Which, as almost anybody knows, is really really bad even if you were careful. He wasn’t, I moved across the room from him. Still, he did remember how to play and did win a couple of good games before the “ring rust” took over. Or Karma from the doin’ you know what an’ all. So, naturally, or unnaturally, Brian was now out of the Tournament. The problem becomes, everyone from Mathew’s group needs to wait on him before they can leave to eat. Mathew can win against anyone, anywhere, anytime, but it is his friend’s birthday, and the women are famished. Violins played somewhere I’m positive, and he lost. That selfless act though may have caused, what some might call a comic warping and cosmic collusion, and that my friend, might be what allowed Rafael to remain undefeated and win the 8-ball Tournament with Randy coming in second and Matt third.

The league returns Feb 14th and the Captain’s meeting is Feb 7th. If you

have ideas on changes you would like to see the league adopt please speak up, or write a note to your Captain. There are signup sheets on bulletin boards at our sponsors for a second night of league. Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights and afternoons have been discussed, but we need to have enough people to have 3 or 4-person teams. They will possibly play more games, like 3 or maybe even 4. The people that sign up will be deciding many of these questions, and all teams will need Captains. Should people be able to play both nights? Sign up and decide.

Visiting Fort Bragg for the sights and want to meet local people? Start with Karaoke singing at Angelina’s Grill and Bar every Friday night after 9:00 pm. Milano’s Hotel and Bar have Karaoke every other Sunday from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. It is nearly as fun to watch and listen as it is to sing. Not for you? Consider playing in the local pool tournaments. There are almost 100 league players in Fort Bragg and some of them play in the local tournaments- open to anyone who wishes to play a competitive game of 8 or 9-ball pool.

While Fort Bragg Pool League is on holiday until mid-February, you can still play competitive pool on a regular basis. There are 9-ball Tournaments every Monday night at a different venue and usually begin at 7:00 pm. There are 8-ball Tournaments at Welcome Inn every Thursday night at 7:00 pm. There are also 8-ball Tournaments at the Welcome Inn Saturday afternoons which start at 4:00 pm. If you want to start a tournament on another day or at your favorite venue, just speak up and you will have players willing to play. Golden West Saloon has the most complete list of Music and Spirits in Fort Bragg, and now, with a special Whiskey or other beverage, play Corn-Hole or Pool, or just relax and take in a Historic building and listen to the music.

CUE TIP >> If you are reading this you have four days or less, to practice before the league begins. Remember what it feels like to have the team counting on you to win? Practice is for those moments.

Ukiah Bryan came over this past weekend. Tough drive for sure, through torrential rains and rock slides of Highway 20 he drove, just to get quality practice time. After driving over in those rough conditions, and grabbing a quick lunch, he played pool for nearly 5 hours. Then the 79-year-old, might have been seen dancing, and singing James Brown’s, “I feel good” at high volume. Which is somehow inappropriate. Therefore a committee will request the Burke intervention, with Son of Bryan about how the possibility has been raised that some or more likely all of his medications could use more than a teensy weensy adjustment in dosage.
