North Valley Zone Championsh­ip Qualifier

The Northern California Golf Associatio­n, NCGA, North Valley Zone Championsh­ip Qualifier was played on the Little River Golf Course Sunday, February 12th. Fourteen players, seven two-man teams, turned out for the event played on this sunny Sunday. Colin fling and Russel Roach came in first scoring a team seven under par. Placing second were team Dewey Turner and Jason Carmichael shooting a team five under par. These two teams will move on to compete at the next level playing the Poppy Hills course on April 17th and 18th. The top two teams competing in this event will play in the final championsh­ip match at Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hill golf courses on August 21st and 22nd. The best of luck to these teams. Third place resulted in a tie between team Lindy Peters and Dave Coddington and team Jim Ellis and Jim Ehlers. Both teams finished at one under par with Dave shooting a personal best 37 on the back nine. Next year guys keep trying.

Cindy Ellis began playing golf when she was a youthful sixty-four years of age. She started playing with her husband Jim Ellis. Cindy and Jim for twenty-five years had been very active runners and mountain bike adventurer­s. When it was no longer feasible for the couple to engage is such rigorous activities golf came into their lives. Jim had golfed on and off most of his life but Cindy had not. Cindy began playing with Jim who coached her. Today Jim and Cindy play together regularly as well as with others. One of the golfers you see Cindy teaming up with is Gwen Jacobson. Last Monday Chong Mejias chipped in on hole five then on Thursday she chipped in on hole seven. Chong wasn’t finished, on Friday from forty yards down the hill she chipped into the fourth hole. Chong, another late bloomer, began her golfing life when she was 65 years old.

Joshua Grindle Inn, Gwen announced to her husband she was going to the Little River Golf Course to play a round of golf. Heading towards the front door Gwen remembers telling her husband, “Please just tell me to have a good time.” Bill said, “Have a good time.” And today, Gwen shared, when I leave the house to play golf Bill says, “Have a good time.” Early in her golf career, Gwen played with Betty Latham. Betty, at that time, was moving away from tennis and playing more golf. For years Betty and Gwen walked twentyseve­n holes five days every week. For the record Gwen still walks the course and at 83 years of age, Gwen is officially the oldest woman walking the Little River Course. Impressive.
