Vote yes on Prop 51 to meet schools’ needs
California is already in debt — to our children. We owe them classrooms (“School bond deserves a rare no vote,” Editorial, July 28).
The State Allocation Board stopped facility funding in 2012 but didn’t vote to allow higher fees until 2016 (currently stopped due to a lawsuit). The fee formula doesn’t account for the cost of land in the Bay Area. Blocking Proposition 51 will not help districts travel back in time to charge higher fees for completed developments. Fremont has been averaging 750 additional students per year. We have more than 350 temporary classrooms. Every seat is filled. Even when the current lawsuit fails, new fees will only address future development. It will not address residents without children selling their homes to families with children. Proposition 51 is a stopgap school facility funding measure we need now to address current needs while the Legislature fixes the funding formula to address future needs. Vote yes on Prop 51.
