Knee injury ends safety Drew’s Cal football career

Former Stanford golfer David Boote won two matches Thursday at Oak Hills to advance to the U.S. Amateur quarterfin­als in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Boote, from Wales, eliminated Ben Schlottman 3 and 1 in the morning round of 32, then dispatched Cal’s Collin Morikawa 2 and 1 in the afternoon.

Cal’s KK Limbhasut lost in the round of 16 to Michigan’s Nick Carlson in 19 holes.

Limbhasut beat Cristobal Del Solar of Chile 4 and 3 in the morning, while Morikawa routed Doug Ghim 5 and 4.

In Friday’s quarterfin­als, Boote faces Oklahoma’s Brad Dulke.

Football

Cal senior safety Damariay Drew’s college career is over because of an ACL tear suffered during spring practice, coach Sonny Dykes confirmed this week. Drew, from Livermore, doesn’t qualify for another year of eligibilit­y. Drew will spend the rest of the season rehabbing and preparing for the NFL draft. Senior Khari Vanderbilt was listed as the backup on the depth chart. Drew’s loss follows the summer medical retirement of safety Griffin Piatt.

Carlos Strickland, n a 6-foot-5 receiver and 4star recruit from Texas who redshirted last year at Cal, is transferri­ng to Kansas State, according to his tweet. Strickland reportedly left Cal so he could be closer to home as a family member is very ill.

Men’s soccer

Santa Clara was picked to finish first ahead of San Diego in the West Coast Conference preseason poll after the league’s eight coaches voted Thursday. Saint Mary’s was picked to finish eighth. The Broncos will look to defend their 2015 WCC title, a feat that has not been accomplish­ed in the WCC since 2006 and 2007 when the Broncos won back-to-back league championsh­ips.

Santa Clara junior defender Valdemar Andersen and junior forward Carlos Delgadillo and Saint Mary’s senior defender Rafael Sanchez were named to the preseason all-WCC team.

Delgadillo missed three games during the 2015 season but was still the league’s leading scorer with 10 goals.

Teams offer fire aid

The Raiders and 49ers are teaming up to aid in the Lake County Clayton Fire recovery efforts. Each organizati­on will contribute $10,000 to the Konocti Unified School District, which had schools directly impacted by the fire. The Konocti Unified School District, which serves the Clearlake and Lower Lake communitie­s, was scheduled to begin classes on Monday but canceled all school for the week of Aug. 15. Lower Lake High School’s sports fields and equipment were damaged in the fire. The funds from the $20,000 joint donation will go to support the school’s efforts to rebuild fields and restore sports equipment lost in the fire.

San Jose Giants

T.J. Bennett hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, leading the San Jose Giants to a 10-9 win over the host Bakersfiel­d Blaze in a California League game. Bennett hit two homers, and Jonah Arenado, Ronnie Jebavy and Ty Ross also connected as the Giants had five homers as part of their 13-hit attack.
