CAL VS. HAWAII

- — JON WILNER

RECORDS: Cal 0-0, Hawaii 0-0 KICKOFF: Friday, 7 p.m. (PDT) atANZ Stadium in Sydney (capacity: 83,500) TV, RADIO: ESPN, KGO 810 SERIES HISTORY: Tied 2-2. This is the teams’ first meeting since 1994.

STORYLINES: Cal canceled a home game against South Dakota in order to travel 7,500 miles, collect an extra $1 million and face Hawaii in the first college football game played in Australia since 1987.… Important game for the Bears’ postseason hopes in that they have two difficult non-conference tests ahead (San Diego State and Texas) and don’t want to enter Pac-12 play needing six wins in nine games to earn a bowl berth.… Davis Webb, the graduate transfer from Texas Tech, will start at quarterback for the Bears and throw to a talented but in inexperienced group of receivers.… Hawaii is coming off a 3-10 season and has a new head coach in Nick Rolovich.… The Bears are favored by 20 points.… The weather forecast calls for sunny skies and 64 degrees.

CAL INJURY UPDATE: S Damariay Drew (knee) is out. OT Aaron Cochran (knee) is doubtful.

STATS THATMATTER: The Bears have won seven of their past nine season openers and are 2-1 inWeek One under coach Sonny Dykes.… Cal is replacing its top-six receivers but returns three running backs that rushed for at least 500 yards last season.… Hawaii’s defense ranked 120th against the run last season, allowing an average of 240 yards per game.

CALWINS IF: The offensive line dominates. Dykes has hailed this as the best, and deepest, line of his Cal tenure. Even without Cochran, the Bears should control the line of scrimmage, thereby creating running lanes and giving Webb time to establish a rhythm with his receivers.

CAL LOSES IF: The Bears beat themselves. Season openers always bring out the unexpected. Add a new quarterback and the unusual logistics of this game, and Cal could sputter in the early going. But the disparity in talent is immense. Only a spate of turnovers and drive-killing penalties will keep the Bears from starting the season 1-0.
