Gaels volleyball rallies for victory

Saint Mary’s College stormed back from a 1-0 deficit to win three straight matches and defeat Gonzaga in West Coast Conference women’s volleyball action.

Gonzaga opened with a 28-26 win before the Gaels rolled to 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 victories.

Lindsey Knudsen led Saint Mary’s with 14 kills while Payton Rund and Lindsey Calvin each had 13. The Gaels had 59 kills as a team, while Gonzaga had 42.

Summer Avery led all hitters with 10 kills, but San Jose State’s volleyball team couldn’t keep up with host Wyoming in a 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 loss in Mountain West play.

Sabrina Clayton recorded 11 kills to lead Santa Clara, but No. 13 BYU swept three matches, 25-19, 29-27, 25-17. at Provo, Utah.

Golf

Stanford’s Maverick McNealy and Texas’ Scottie Scheffler each shot 69 to lead the United States into second place after two rounds of the World Amateur Team Championsh­ip in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

The U.S. team trails Australia (19-under 267) by eight shots with two rounds remaining.

Soccer

Seattle Sounders forward and former Stanford star Jordan Morris is ranked No. 3 on Major League Soccer’s 24 Under 24 list. Morris, 21, finished behind only Orlando City SC’s Cyle Larin and New York City FC’s Jack Harrison on the annual list.

Morris, a two-time Stanford All-American and 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy winner, has exploded for 10 goals in his first pro season, only the fifth rookie to do so in league history. He also has five game-winning goals, an MLS rookie record.

Morris decided to skip his senior season at Stanford and sign with the Sounders as a Homegrown Player in January. He was named MVP at the College Cup after leading the Cardinal to the program’s first NCAA title with a two-goal performanc­e in the championsh­ip in December.
