Cal women’s soccer still perfect at home

-

Ifeoma Onumonu and Arielle Ship each scored twice to lead the No. 17 Cal women’s soccer team to a 4-1 win over Washington.

Cal (9-2, 2-0 Pac-12) is 70 at home this season.

“It’s great to see Ife and Ari both score goals,” head coach Neil McGuire said of his seniors.

“They are being dangerous with their movement to get into max space and create scoring opportunities. It’s very hard to defend that.”

Ship, Emma Fletcher and Indigo Gibson had assists for the Bears.

Santa Clara played to a scoreless tie at No. 3 BYU. SCU’s Melissa Lowder made six saves against the Cougars, who had scored 30 goals in their first 10 games.

Santa Clara (3-4-4, 00-1) is now 7-1-4 all-time against BYU (9-1-1, 0-0-1).

The Broncos’ possession-oriented style of play has helped them keep the Cougar offense in check.

“I’m very proud of the team’s performance today,” Santa Clara coach Jerry Smith said. “The team had a very disciplined performance against a very talented and dynamic offensive team. We did a great job of keeping possession and that really helped us keep BYU’s talented front line from scoring. It’s the same formula we’ve used in the past to have success against them.”

Earthquakes

Forward Quincy Amarikwa underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee, the team announced.

Amarikwa, 28, was injured during Saturday’s match against Sporting Kansas City and is expected to sidelined for at least nine months.
