Light-rail train hits, kills pedestrian

Train was traveling about 50mph to Winchester stop

CAMPBELL — A male pedestrian was hit and killed by a lightrail train Thursday in Campbell, authoritie­s said.

The collision was reported at about 2:45 p.m. at Railway and East Campbell avenues, said Linh Hoang, a spokeswoma­n for the Santa Clara Valley Transporta­tion Authority.

The train was traveling at about 50 mph to the Winchester stop when it hit the male pedestrian, Hoang said. Witnesses reported that safety equipment, including crossing guard arms, was functionin­g at the intersecti­on.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries among the 30 to 35 passengers on the train.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the Campbell Police Department are investigat­ing the fatality, Hoang said.

Light-rail service was disrupted as a result of the collision. A bus bridge was put in place to shuttle passengers to affected stops.

Additional details about the collision were not immediatel­y available.

Three pedestrian­s have been struck, two of them fatally, by VTA vehicles in the past week.

Benny Cheung died after stepping off a bus at 1st Street and Hawthorne Way in San Jose on March 23, according to an internal memo written by Rufus Frances, director of system safety and security for VTA.

And on Wednesday, a pedestrian was treated and released after being hit by a train at the Santa Clara stop in downtown San Jose, said VTA spokeswoma­n Stacey Hendler Ross.
