Bubic, Stanford roll in NCAA baseball opener

Dufner, Lingmerth share lead at Memorial; Spieth one shot back

Kris Bubic scattered five hits over eight dominant innings and Quinn Brodey homered twice as Stanford opened NCAA baseball play with a 10-0 thrashing of Sacramento State on Thursday night at Sunken Diamond.

Bubic struck out 11 and walked none. Brodey was 4 for 4 with two solo homers. Matt Winaker and Jack Klein also homered for Stanford.

The Cardinal, 41-14 and the top seed in the Stanford Regional, plays Friday at 6 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton (3521), which pounded 22 hits in a 13-2 rout of BYU in Thursday’s early game. Sacramento State (32-28) plays BYU (37-20) in an eliminatio­n game Friday at 1 p.m.

Stanford placed four players on the All Pac-12 team — pitcher Colton Hock, first baseman Winaker, second baseman Duke Kinemon and shortstop Nico Hoerner. Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn also made the team and was named the conference Freshman of the Year.

Golf

Jason Dufner had a birdie putt on every hole until the 18th at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. Even with a bogey on the final hole, Dufner had a 7-under 65 for his best score at Muirfield Village, giving him a tie for the first-round lead with David Lingmerth. They were one shot ahead of Jordan Spieth.

Roberto De Vicenzo, known as much for his scorecard error at the Masters as his British Open victory that made him Argentina’s first major golf champion, died at his home in Buenos Aires. He was 94.

NFL

The 49ers signed cornerback Will Da- vis to a one-year deal and waived receiver Rashad Ross to make room on the roster. Davis, originally drafted by Miami in the third round in 2013, played five games with Baltimore the past two seasons before being waived in November.

Linebacker Demario Davis is returnn ing to the New York Jets after being traded from Cleveland for safety Calvin Pryor.

nBaltimore Ravens cornerback Tavon Young has torn his ACL and is likely lost for the 2017 season.

College football

Longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer and former Texas coach Mack Brown, along with former players Charles Woodson, Ed Reed and Calvin Johnson, are among those making their first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot this year.

NHL

A good night’s sleep has P.K. Subban more confident than ever about what the Nashville Predators will do on their own ice trailing the Pittsburgh Penguins 0-2 in the Stanley Cup Final. He delivered an All-Star guarantee for Saturday night. “There’s no question,” Subban said. “We’re going to win the next game, and then we’ll move forward.

“We’re capable of playing even better than we did in Pittsburgh, and I thought we played some great hockey,” Subban added. “I mean, out of 120 minutes, maybe we’d like to take back six of them.”

Miscellany

L.A. Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe will be sidelined six to eight weeks by a groin injury.

USA Swimming turned to Major n League Soccer for its new leader, picking Colorado Rapids president Tim Hinchey to succeed Chuck Wielgus, who died in April after a long battle with cancer.
