Jaguars top Brady-less Patriots Golf

Chad Henne hit Keelan Cole on a 97-yard touchdown pass, Corey Grant scored on a 79-yard run and the Jacksonvil­le Jaguars feasted on a Patriots lineup without Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski — or much defense at all — to beat the defending NFL champions 31-24 on Thursday night in their exhibition opener.

With the reigning Super Bowl MVP sitting out, Jimmy Garoppolo completed a Brady-like 22 of 28 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

BRONCOS 24, BEARS 17» Mitch Trubisky threw for 166 yards and led three scoring drives after Mike Glennon struggled for Chicago, before Denver scored two long touchdowns in the closing minutes to beat the Bears in the preseason opener. Wentz went 4 for 4 for 56 yards and a score on his first series, eluding a potential sack and burning the Packers on third and fourth downs in Philadelph­ia’s loss.

STANFORD GRAD WINS GOLD» Stanford alum Kori Carter captured the women’s 400- meter hurdles at the IAAF World Track and Field Championsh­ips on Thursday, pulling away down the stretch to win in 53.07 at the Olympic Stadium. Carter, running for the United States. Ramil Guliyev of Turkey earned the upset of the world championsh­ips when he matched Wayde Van Niekerk stride for stride and won the 200-meter title by lunging at the line just ahead of the favored South African. Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago took bronze, while Isaac Makwala faded down the stretch and finished sixth. Guliyev, a little- known 27- year- old sprinter who transferre­d nationalit­y from Azerbaijan six years ago, was not even among the top-10 performers this year before he stunned his rivals and the 60,000- sellout crowd at the Olympic Stadium, which had come to see Van Niekerk and Makwala fight for gold. LI REACHES QUARTERFIN­ALS» Redwood Coast’s Lucy Li combined for 12 birdies in the second and third rounds of match play on Thursday to reach the quarterfin­als of the U.S. Women’s Amateur. The 14-yearold Li, who made the cut this year at the LPGA Tour’s first major, the ANA Inspiratio­n, made seven birdies over 13 holes during her 6-and-5 win over Bethany Wu in the morning round of 32 at San Diego Country Club. In the round of 16, Li made four birdies on the front nine and held on for a 1-up win over Shannon Aubert, the stroke-play medalist. Aubert rallied with birdies on 15, 16 and 17, and her long birdie attempt from the fringe on 18 hit the pin but didn’t drop. Stanford sophomore Albane Valenzuela won two matches to advance to the quarterfin­als. The Olympian from Switzerlan­d beat Cheyenne Knight of Aledo, Texas, 1-up in the morning, then downed Stephanie Lau, 4 and 3 in the afternoon. Valenzuela was 1-under in the first match and 4-under in the second, playing bogeyfree golf in the latter.

RANDOLPH ARRESTED» Sacramento Kings forward Zach Randolph was arrested on a marijuana charge after several police cars were vandalized when a large gathering became unruly at a Los Angeles housing project, authoritie­s said. Randolph, 36, was taken into custody late Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana with intent to sell, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE EDUCATION» NCAA member schools will be required to provide sexual violence education for all college athletes, coaches and athletics administra­tors under a police announced Thursday by the organizati­on’s board of governors. Campus leaders such as athletic directors and school presidents will be required to attest that athletes, coaches and administra­tors have been educated on sexual violence each year. The move follows a number of high-profile assault cases, including Baylor.

High school football

PLAYER KILLED» A high school football player performing a drill used by the U. S. Navy SEALs for conditioni­ng was killed when the log he and teammates were carrying fatally struck him in the head, police said. Joshua Mileto, 16, was taking part in a preseason exercise camp with the Sachem East High School football team when the accident occurred at the school on eastern Long Island, NY according to Suffolk County homicide detectives.
