Raiders cornerback Sean Smith is facing issues more serious than his hold on a starting position.

Smith, 30, faces two felony charges as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office alleges he “beat and then stomped” the head of his sister’s boyfriend in a July 4 incident in Old Town Pasadena on the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard in the early morning hours.

A warrant for Smith’s arrest was filed Wednesday, his arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 29 and the maximum prison sentence if convicted is seven years. Ricardo Santiago of the L. A. County District Attorney’s office said Smith was booked Thursday at the Pasadena Police Department and released on bond.

According to the statement, the incident “inflicted great bodily injury upon the victim.” He was charged with felony assault and battery with serious bodily injury.”

Smith, who signed a fouryear, $40 million contract last season, has struggled through training camp and was temporarily demoted to the second team. Smith was back working with the first team Wednesday.

Raiders officials could not be reached for comment. RAVENS 31, DOLPHINS 7 » Ryan Mallett threw for 113 yards and a touchdown, Josh Woodrum ran for two more scores and the Baltimore Ravens beat the Dolphins in the second exhibition game for both teams. Jay Cutler played the first two series for the Dolphins, his debut as injured starter Ryan Tannehill’s replacement in Miami. He was 3 of 6 for 24 yards, some of it in a no-huddle tempo, and his highlight play was one that didn’t count. LONG’S PROTEST » Chris Long, the Philadelphia defensive end who grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, put his arm around team- mate Malcolm Jenkins as a show of unity during the national anthem before the Eagles’ exhibition game against Buffalo.

Jenkins stood with his right fist raised in the air as he’s done since last season. Long was to his right with his left arm on Jenkins’ shoulder.
