Every ties first-round record at Wyndham

Matt Every matched the Wyndham Championsh­ip’s first-round record with a 9-under 61 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead.

Every tied the openingrou­nd mark set in 2010 by Arjun Atwal, who went on to win the PGA Tour’s final tournament before the postseason.

Henrik Stenson opened with a 62. Former Wyndham winner Webb Simpson was at 63 along with Cameron Smith, Vaughn Taylor, Tim Wilkinson, Harold Varner III, Brian Campbell and Sam Saunders.

Davis Love III — the 53-year- old player who has won this tournament three times, most recently in 2015 — matched Martin Flores and Rick Lamb with a 64. TUS IN DOUBT» Two- time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka says her participat­ion in the U. S. Open is in doubt because she might not be able to bring her son with her to New York as a re- sult of her separation from the baby’s father. Azarenka wrote via a posting on Twitter on Thursday that she is “faced with a difficult situation which may not allow me to return to work right away.” Added Azarenka, who used to be No. 1 in the WTA rankings: “No parent should have to decide between their child or their career.” DIMITROV RALLIES » The top seeds at the Western & Southern Open waited hours through rain in Mason, Ohio before their matches were postponed late Thursday night, setting up a chaotic weekend finish. Rafael Nadal, the top seed in the men’s bracket, never took the court. Both face the prospect of a long day Friday — an early afternoon match and, if they win, another at night. Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza overcame a long rain delay in the third set and fought off three match points before advancing to the quarterfin­als.

ZAJAC OUT FOUR TO SIX MONTHS » The New Jersey Devils have lost top center Travis Zajac for four to six months with a pectoral injury. Devils executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero announced that Zajac had surgery to repair the pectoral muscle on Thursday. Shero said the Zajac was hurt last week during offseason training. Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow performed the surgery and estimated that Zajac’s recovery time could last until February.

BARCELONA’S SUAREZ OUT » After losing Neymar for good, Barcelona will also face the first month of the Spanish league season without Luis Suarez. Barcelona said Thursday that Suarez will be sidelined for four weeks after medical tests revealed a knee injury in his right leg.
