Band teacher dies after being hit by own car

PACIFICA » A 62-year- old Pacifica man died Wednesday after he was hit by his own vehicle, police said.

Around 11 a.m., Pacifica police responded to a report of a traffic collision on the 1400 block of Palmetto Avenue. Officers found an unresponsive man with major injuries.

The man was rushed to a San Francisco hospital, where he died.

A preliminary investigation revealed the man had been hit by his own vehicle, which had rolled away, police said.

On Thursday, the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the man as Jerry Downs.

Downs taught band at Ocean Shore Elementary School and Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School.

The 1400 block of Palmetto Avenue was closed for four hours while police investigated the crash.

Additional details about the crash, including what caused the vehicle to roll away and hit the man, were not immediately available.
