Indians are one game shy of matching Grays’ record

- News service reports

It’s time for the 2017 Cleveland Indians to be introduced to the one and only 1884 Providence Grays.

They share some unlikely history, the two teams, which played amere 141 years apart, are the only two clubs to have ever won 27 out of 28 games.

The Indians joined the Grays on Thursday when Francisco Lindor’s three-run homer led Cleveland to a 4-1 victory over the Angels.

The Grays ended up winning 28 of 29, leaving the Indians one game shy of matching the record.

“Wewant to keep it going,” Cleveland reliever Dan Otero said. “I mean, it’s crazy. That stuff doesn’t happen in baseball.”

The Indians have reeled off five straight wins since ending a 22game winning streak, with Trevor Bauer getting their only loss since Aug. 24. Bauer (16-9, 4.41) takes the ball in the opener today vs. Seattle.

The victory left the Indians 9657, one game behind the Dodgers for the best overall record and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

“We just focus on what we have in front of our feet,” Lindor said. “We really don’t pay attention to any other teams.”

Dickey not sure about future

R. A. Dickey isn’t sure he’ll be back with Atlanta in 2018, or even still pitching in the majors, so he took aminute to savor what he said could be the final home start of his career.

The 42-year- old’s knuckleball cooperated for a memorable night. Dickey frustrated Washington with his knuckler for eight innings as the Braves beat the Nationals, 3-2.

“I’d be lying to say I didn’t have some emotions about it,” Dickey said. “This could be my last start ever at a home venue. But we’re going tomake that decision at the end of the season and see how I feel and what goes on there.”
