No. 25 Memphis rallies for victory

Riley Ferguson threw for 471 yards and had a 21yard TD pass with 1:28 left and Patrick Taylor rushed for a career-high four touchdowns as No. 25 Memphis overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Houston 42-38 on Thursday night.

Ferguson was 33 of 53 and found Sean Dykes to cap an 8-play, 80-yard drive that took 1:49 to give Memphis (6-1, 3-1 American) its only lead. Anthony Miller caught 10 passes for 178 yards, and Tony Pollard had nine catches for 91 yards.

Memphis finished with 501 yards.

Houston (4- 3, 2-2) was driving when Kyle Postma fumbled at the Memphis 49, with T. J. Carter recovering with a minute remaining. After Memphis punted, Postma’s pass was intercepte­d by Carter with 24 seconds remaining to end the game. LAWSUIT AGAINST KIFFIN DISMISSED » A judge has dismissed a fraud suit filed against Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin. Shelby County Circuit Judge Lara Alvis dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. The decision was entered on Oct. 10, according to online court documents.

Former Alabama receiver Antonio “A.C.” Carter had said Kiffin and Florida Atlantic offered him a job to get him to help sign a prospect and then failed to follow through on repeated assurances that the job was his.

Golf

Justin Thomas eagled twice in a 9-under-par 63 to take a three-stroke lead after thefirst roundof the CJ Cup, the first U.S. PGA Tour regular-season event in South Korea.

Chez Reavie, Gavin Kyle Green, Scott Brown, Patrick Reed and Marc Lei sh man all opened with 66s and were in a five-way tie for second at 6 under.

Jhonattan Vegas and Charles Howell III were among five players a shot further back at 5 under.

Jason Day and fellow Australian Rod P amp ling were at 4 under, one stroke ahead of Pat Perez. Adam Scott had a 72, with four birdies and four bogeys. GARCIA HAS SHARE OF LEAD» Tournament host Sergio Garcia shot a 5-under 66 to grab a share of the lead at the Andalucia Val der ram a Masters in the European Tour at Sotogrande, Spain.

The Spaniard had seven birdies and two bogeys at Real Club Valderrama to finish the opening day level with Joost Luiten of the Netherland­s.

The 37-year- old Garcia is competing in his native Spain for the first time since winning his firstmajor at the Masters in April.

Soccer

Alex Morgan scored in a fourth straight game, Julie Ertz scored for the fourth time in five games, and the U.S. women beat South Korea 3-1 in New Orleans.

Megan Rapinoe added her 34th internatio­nal goal and her 42nd assist.

Having assisted on Ertz’s diving header in the first half, Rapinoe scored on a penalty kick she drew in the 49th minute when she pounced on a loose ball about 12 yards in front of the goal and was tripped by Ji Sohyun.

U.S. forward Mallory Pugh had to leave the game late in the first half with a right hamstring injury. There was no immediate word on the severity of her injury after she was helped off the field by trainers.

Meanwhile, Carli Lloyd returned froma nine-week absence because of an ankle injury, entering the game as a substitute in the 77thminute.

ALONSO TO STAY WITH MCLAREN » Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has put an end to the uncertaint­y by extending his contract with McLaren to the 2018 season. The two-time F1 champion’s current threeyear contract ends this year and the 36-year-old Alonso was considerin­g his options with other teams, and even whether to continue in F1.

BEIJING WORKING ON GETTING SNOW FOR 2022 » Beijing, host of the 2022Winter Olympic Games, has a snow problem: Hardly any of the white stuff falls on the Chinese capital despite freezing temperatur­es.

Taking the matter in hand, the games organizing committee has formed a “snow affairs work team” and invited experts from Finland, Canada and other nations to help out, according to the official “2017 Beijing Fact File” produced by the city government.

The work team would “expedite research on key technologi­es for making and preserving snow, and start to formula tea work plan to ensure suitable snow resources,” the publicatio­n said. HEAD OF RIO GAMES TO BE RELEASED FROM JAIL » Carlos Nuzman, the head of last year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics, will be released from jail following a decision in a top Brazilian court.

The 75-year-old Nuzman was arrested twoweeks ago amid an investigat­ion into a vote-buying scheme to bring the 2016 Games to Rio. He is expected to leave prison today.
