Nashville’s Rinne shuts down Flyers

Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots, and Colton Sissons scored in the third period to lift Nashville Predators to a 1- 0 win over the Philadelph­ia Flyers on Thursday.

It was the defending Western Conference champions’ fourth win in five games.

Rinne was strong in his 44th career shutout and first of the season.

The Flyers had combined for 13 goals intheir first two home games and scored 26 overall in their first six games.

• Flyers founder Ed Snider was honored with a 9-foot bronze statue outside the Wells Fargo Center.

Snider founded the team in the 1960s and remained chairman until his death in April 2016. The statue was unveiled before the Flyers played Nashville on Thursday to mark the 50th anniversar­y of the Flyers’ first home game in 1967.

The 1,300-pound bronze statue, which stands on a 3-foot base encased by granite, has a Stanley Cup championsh­ip ring on his left ring finger that fans are encouraged to rub for good luck. BRUINS 6, CANUCKS 3 » Patrice Bergeron had a goal and three assists in his season debut, moving up to seventh on Boston’s career scoring list, as the Bruins scored five straight goals after falling behind 1- 0 early in the first period.

Anton Khudobin made 26 saves for Boston while starting in place of Tuukka Rask, who is out indefinite­ly with a concussion he suffered in practice Wednesday.

The Bruins also activated right wing David Backes (diverticul­itis) and placed center Ryan Spooner on injured reserve with a tear in his right groin. Spooner was hurt last week at Las Vegas and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. This year’s No. 1 draft pick Nico Hischier scored twice for New Jersey. The Swiss center’s opening goal was the first of his NHL career.

The star forward was hurt on a hit by Jeff Petry during the Kings’ 5-1 victory over Montreal on Wednesday night to extend the best start in franchise history (50-1). Petry’s skate came off the ice and connected with the inside of Carter’s lower leg during the first period.

Carter had 32 goals and 34 assists last year in his highest- scoring season since 2011. His absence will strain Los Angeles’ depth at center behind captain Anze Kopitar.

The Kings also signed defenseman Derek Forbort to a two-year, $5.05million extension and signed veteran center Brooks Laich to a one-year deal.
