Man shot sev­eral times near to Face­book head­quar­ters

MENLO PARK » A home­less man was in crit­i­cal con­di­tion Thurs­day af­ter be­ing shot sev­eral times near Face­book head­quar­ters Wed­nes­day night, ac­cord­ing to po­lice.

The vic­tim suf fered bul­let wounds “through­out the body” and his in­juries are con­sid­ered life threat­en­ing, Menlo Park Po­lice Sgt. Kevin Paugh said Thurs­day.

“We’re work­ing on a num­ber of leads,” Paugh said.

In­for­ma­tion from the vic­tim and wit­nesses in­di­cates the as­sailant was an­other home­less per­son, but po­lice haven’t iden­ti­fied a sus­pect, Paugh said.

Around 5: 20 p. m. Wed­nes­day, of­fi­cers re­sponded to a re­port of a man with ab­dom­i­nal bleed­ing on the rail­road tracks at Univer­sity Av­enue. He was found on the de­com­mis­sioned line about 150 feet north of the cross­ing. Po­lice be­lieve he was shot at around 5 p. m.

Pol ice said that although the man had been shot sev­eral times, he was con­scious. He was rushed to Stan­ford Hos­pi­tal and un­der­went surgery. By late Wed­nes­day night, he was listed in crit­i­cal con­di­tion. On Thurs­day, the man’s con­di­tion re­mained the same, po­lice said.

The vic­tim lives in the marsh near where he was shot, ac­cord­ing to po­lice.

“He’s a lo­cal tran­sient in the area that we’re fa­mil­iar with,” Paugh said.

A search in­volv­ing of­fi­cers from sur­round­ing agen­cies, a Cal­i­for­nia High­way Pa­trol air­craft and a Menlo Park Fire Pro­tec­tion District drone found sev­eral home­less en­camp­ments in the area, but lo­cated no sus­pect. The oc­cu­pants were de­tained, in­ter­viewed and later re­leased.

De­tails about what sparked the shoot­ing were not avail­able.
