Man shot several times near to Facebook headquarters
MENLO PARK » A homeless man was in critical condition Thursday after being shot several times near Facebook headquarters Wednesday night, according to police.
The victim suf fered bullet wounds “throughout the body” and his injuries are considered life threatening, Menlo Park Police Sgt. Kevin Paugh said Thursday.
“We’re working on a number of leads,” Paugh said.
Information from the victim and witnesses indicates the assailant was another homeless person, but police haven’t identified a suspect, Paugh said.
Around 5: 20 p. m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a man with abdominal bleeding on the railroad tracks at University Avenue. He was found on the decommissioned line about 150 feet north of the crossing. Police believe he was shot at around 5 p. m.
Pol ice said that although the man had been shot several times, he was conscious. He was rushed to Stanford Hospital and underwent surgery. By late Wednesday night, he was listed in critical condition. On Thursday, the man’s condition remained the same, police said.
The victim lives in the marsh near where he was shot, according to police.
“He’s a local transient in the area that we’re familiar with,” Paugh said.
A search involving officers from surrounding agencies, a California Highway Patrol aircraft and a Menlo Park Fire Protection District drone found several homeless encampments in the area, but located no suspect. The occupants were detained, interviewed and later released.
Details about what sparked the shooting were not available.
