SMC nearly blows 26-point halftime lead to Harvard

Saint Mary’s 26-point halftime lead paid off for the Gaels.

Jock Landale scored 26 points and the 21stranked Gaels withstood getting outscored in the second half to beat Harvard 89-71 on Thursday in the opening game of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton. The Gaels face Washington State at 10:30 a.m. Friday on ESPNEWS.

Emmett Naar just missed a triple double, finishing with 11 points, a career-high nine rebounds and nine assists for the Gaels (5- 0).

Bryce Aiken led the Crimson (2- 3) with 22 points, including 20 in the second half when Harvard outscored Saint Mary’s 5143. Chris Lewis added 18 points.

After trailing by 26 points at halftime, Harvard got within 14 thanks to a blistering start in the second half.

“We played our best half of the year in first half and we played about our worst five minutes to start the second half,” Gaels coach Randy Bennett said.

The Gaels answered with a 17-8 run to extend their lead to 26 points. FLORIDA 108, STANFORD 87 » Reid Travis had 23 points for Stanford (33), which lost its second straight to an opponent ranked in the top 10. The Cardinal trailed by as many as 38 to the No. 7 Gators in the Phil Knight Invitation­al.

Stanford faces Gonzaga or Ohio State at 6 p.m. Friday on ESPN2.

The Cardinal have been short-handed as Dorian Pickens and Marcus Sheffield nurse foot injuries, putting three freshmen in the starting lineup. Stanford was no match for the Gators, who jumped out to a 16-5 lead and trailed by 25 in the first half. Alanna Smith added 15 points and eight rebounds, Nadia Fingall 11 points and Marta Sniezek 10 points with eight rebounds and seven assists for the Cardinal (3-2).
