SMC nearly blows 26-point half­time lead to Har­vard

Saint Mary’s 26-point half­time lead paid off for the Gaels.

Jock Lan­dale scored 26 points and the 21stranked Gaels with­stood get­ting outscored in the sec­ond half to beat Har­vard 89-71 on Thurs­day in the open­ing game of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton. The Gaels face Wash­ing­ton State at 10:30 a.m. Fri­day on ESPNEWS.

Em­mett Naar just missed a triple dou­ble, fin­ish­ing with 11 points, a ca­reer-high nine re­bounds and nine as­sists for the Gaels (5- 0).

Bryce Aiken led the Crim­son (2- 3) with 22 points, in­clud­ing 20 in the sec­ond half when Har­vard outscored Saint Mary’s 5143. Chris Lewis added 18 points.

Af­ter trail­ing by 26 points at half­time, Har­vard got within 14 thanks to a blis­ter­ing start in the sec­ond half.

“We played our best half of the year in first half and we played about our worst five min­utes to start the sec­ond half,” Gaels coach Randy Ben­nett said.

The Gaels an­swered with a 17-8 run to ex­tend their lead to 26 points. FLORIDA 108, STAN­FORD 87 » Reid Travis had 23 points for Stan­ford (33), which lost its sec­ond straight to an op­po­nent ranked in the top 10. The Car­di­nal trailed by as many as 38 to the No. 7 Ga­tors in the Phil Knight In­vi­ta­tional.

Stan­ford faces Gon­zaga or Ohio State at 6 p.m. Fri­day on ESPN2.

The Car­di­nal have been short-handed as Do­rian Pick­ens and Mar­cus Sh­effield nurse foot in­juries, putting three fresh­men in the start­ing lineup. Stan­ford was no match for the Ga­tors, who jumped out to a 16-5 lead and trailed by 25 in the first half. Alanna Smith added 15 points and eight re­bounds, Na­dia Fin­gall 11 points and Marta Sniezek 10 points with eight re­bounds and seven as­sists for the Car­di­nal (3-2).
