Stanford snaps losing streak; Cal loses 9th in a row

It wasn’t pretty, but it was good enough for Stanford.

Junior Reid Travis scored 24 points — 21 of them in the first half — and the Cardinal steadied itself just in time to avoid blowing a 20-point lead against Oregon State on Thursday night, snapping a threegame losing streak with an 80-71 victory at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal (12-11, 6- 4 Pac-12) scored 42 points in the paint and shot a seasonhigh 56 percent against a team that entered the game leading the Pac-12 Conference by allowing just 68.6 points per game.

Reid scored 13 of the first 18 points for Stanford, which jumped to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes, quickly increased the margin to 20, andwas poised to cruise to the win.

But the Beavers clawed back behind Drew Eubanks and Tres Tinkle — 19 and 18 points, respective­ly — and cut the lead to six with about eight minutes left.

The Cardinal made 8 of 10 free throws over its next six possession­s to restore control. Senior Dorian Pickens scored 15 points, and freshman Daejon Davis finished with 12.

The Beavers (11-10, 3- 6)

lost for the fifth time in six games.

OREGON66, CAL53 » Plagued by foul trouble in addition to their usual poor shooting, the Bears dropped their ninth straight game, matching the second-longest los- ing streak in school history. Cal (1- 9, 7-16 Pac-12), which lost nine in a row in 1979-80 and also in 1954-55, hasn’t lost 10 straight since 1961- 62. Oregon (15-7, 5- 4) opened the game with a 9- 0 run, holding the Bears scoreless for the opening 6:24, during which Cal missed six shots and had six turnovers. Justice Sueing, one of the Bears’ promising freshmen, sat out much of the first half after picking up three fouls. Marcus Lee and Kingsley Okoroh, the Bears’ two big men, both fouled out. PACIFIC 63, SANTA CLARA 45 » KJ Feagin hit five 3-pointers and paced the Broncos (8-15, 5- 6 WCC) with 21 points in the loss at the Leavey Center. Miles Reynolds tossed in a career-high 23 points for the Tigers (1113, 6- 5), who snapped a three-game slide. GONZAGA69, SANDIEGO59 » Johnathan Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the No. 14 Bulldogs edged the stubborn Toreros in Spokane, Washington. Josh Perkins and Zach Norvell Jr. each scored 13 for Gonzaga (20-4, 10-1West Coast), which has won 18 of the past 19 games against the Toreros. Olin Carter III scored 21 points for San Diego (15-8, 6-5). The Bulldogs have never lost to the Toreros in the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004. WASHINGTON 68, ARIZONA STATE 64 » Noah Dickerson scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Huskies past the No. 25 Sun Devils. Washington (16-6, 6-3 Pac-12) has won three straight. The 64 points were a season-low for ASU (16- 6, 4- 6). TEMPLE81, WICHITA STATE 79 » Obi Enechionyi­a hit two free throws with 18.1 seconds left in overtime, and the Owls (12-10, 4- 6 American Athletic Conference) upset the No. 16 Shockers (17- 5, 7- 3). Temple earned another big win alongside upsets of Clemson and Auburn early in the season.

UCONN83, SOUTHCAROL­INA 58 » Kia Nurse scored 23 points, and Katie Lou Samuelson added 20 as the top- ranked Huskies (21- 0) powered past the defending national champion Gamecocks (18- 4) in a nonconfere­nce matchup. UConn extended its NCAA mark with its 48th straight road win. SAINT MARY’S 73, USF 59 » Stella Beck led the Gaels (14- 8, 7- 4 WCC) with 19 points as they beat the rival Dons (10-12, 5- 6) at War Memorial Gym. PACIFIC55, SANTACLARA­37 » The Broncos held the WCC’s highest- scoring team 23 points under its season average, but SCU set a season-low for points — scoring just 11 in the second half — as its two-game winning streak was snapped.

Morgan McGwire and Taylor Berry scored eight points each for the Broncos (7-15, 3- 8 WCC). McGwire grabbed 13 rebounds. TENNESSEE 87, TEXAS A&M 62 » Jaime Nared scored 23 points, and Mercedes Russell had a double- double as the No. 12 Volunteers 184, 6-3 SEC) dominated the fourth quarter to beat the No. 14 Aggies (17-7, 6-3) in Knoxville. In a game that featured 30 lead changes.
