Nothing says Valentine’s Day like a good pillow fight

Remember to BYOP — bring your own pillow — if you’re heading to the annual Feathers of Fury event Sunday in downtown San Jose

Whether you’re in love, out of love, underloved or just over love, Sunday should be a lovely day to express yourself by bopping the person nearest you with a pillow. That’s right, the eighth annual Feathers of Fury — a preValentine’s Day pillow fight — is returning to downtown San Jose this weekend.

Modeled after a bigger event in San Francisco, Feathers of Fury usually draws a fun crowd — sometimes in costume — who good-naturedly smack each other with a nice sham. And the feathers really do fly, so many people wisely wear a mask or bandanna over their mouth and nose.

The fight will unfold at noon in front of what used to be Camera 12 on Paseo de San Antonio. It’s BYOP — bring your own pillow — and don’t forget to help clean up after the feathers have settled.

MORE LOVENOTES »

If you’d prefer an affair that doesn’t involve pulling feathers from your hair, consider the 38th annual Valentine’s Day Revel, which is being presented by Poetry Center San Jose at Cafe Stritch. This is also on Sunday, which seems to be “Valentine’s Day Observed” this year, and features former Santa Clara County Poets Laureate Nils Peterson and Sally Ashton reading poems about love and bantering with each other. There’ll also be music provided by the For This Hour singers. The doors open at 5 p.m., and admission is free.

And if you’re still looking for an unusual gift for that special someone, the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy has its Adopt-A-Rose package available. You can dedicate a rosebush at San Jose’s Heritage Rose Garden on Taylor Street to your sweetie with a personalized plaque that’ll be up for a year. You’ll also get a box of Schurra’s chocolates, a cookie from Catered Too! and a free rose each month for a year from Citti’s Florist as more tangible tokens of your esteem. RARE FINDS INMORGAN HILL »

Many libraries have used book sales for fundraisers — and I recommend them highly — but the Morgan Hill Library has something really special coming up this month. The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library has organized a sale of old, rare and “interesting” books on Feb. 17.

Among the offerings will be Nancy Drew mys- teries from the 1960s, a 1961 guide to Fortran programming and sets of century- old leatherbound books. It’s not all books, either, as one of the items for sale is a lithograph of a Judith Deim painting of John Steinbeck signed by the artist.

“It’s amazing the variety of books and ‘stuff’ that is donated,” Carol O’Hare of the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library said.

The sale runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the library at 660 W. Main Ave. You can take a look at the items for sale at www.friendsmhlibrary.org.

I’M TAWKIN’HERE » Can

art change your life? That’s what Lisa Coscino, executive director of the New Museum in Los Gatos, will be talking about on Feb. 22 at Coffee Tawk, a new monthly conversation series at NUMU that is free with admission (or just free for members).

The hourlong conversation starts at 2 p.m., and you’ll need to bring your own coffee or tea, but the museum will provide the cookies. Get more information and check out future talks at numulosgatos.org.
