USF sends Saint Mary’s to second straight loss

Frankie Ferrari made a key 3-pointer as part of a big USF run late in the second half, and then added a clinching layup with 58.5 seconds remaining, and the Dons held on to upset No. 15 Saint Mary’s 70- 63 on Thursday.

Ferrari finished with 20 points and seven assists, Jordan Ratinho scored 13 and Jimbo Lull had 10 points and seven rebounds to help USF ( 15-13 7- 8 West Coast Conference) to its first win in five games against ranked opponents this season.

It was a bitter loss for the Gaels (24- 4, 13-2), who lost their second straight and dropped a game behind No. 9 Gonzaga in the WCC. Saint Mary’s back-to-back losses have come on the heels of a 19-game winning streak that was the longest in the nation.

Jock Landale, the Gaels’ leading scorer who was dominant in Saint Mary’s 79- 43 home win over USF on Feb. 1, had 19 points before fouling out with 1:41 remaining. Landale made six of his first seven shots, but went 0-for- 5 in the second half. He still became the fifth player in school history to score 1,500 career points with 700 rebounds.

It’s the first win by San Francisco coach Kyle Smith in four attempts against his former mentor, SaintMary’s coach Randy Bennett.

The Dons had lost 24 of the previous 25 games be- tween the two teams. SANTA CLARA 81, PORTLAND

Women

STANFORD 74, CAL 69 » Kiana Williams scored a career-high 26 points with five 3-pointers and theNo. 14 Cardinal won its seventh straight despite not making as hot for the final eight minutes.

A basket by Kaylee Johnson with 8:04 to play put the Cardinal on top 65- 51 but after that they missed nine shots and had three turnovers. But Cal got no closer than four as Stanford made 8 of 10 free throws in the last two minutes.

Brittany McPhee added 17 points on 5- of-20 shooting for the Cardinal (19-8, 13-2 Pac-12), who have won five straight over Cal.

Asha Thomas had 20 points for the Golden Bears (17-9, 8-7).
