Flames’ Gillies wins first start of season

Jon Gillies rebounded from a first- minute goal to make 35 saves in his first NHL start of the season, helping the Calgary Flames beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Thursday night in Glendale, Ariz.

Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and two assists, Sean Monahan added a goal and an assist, and Sam Bennett, Mark Jankowski and Matthew Tkachuk also scored. Dougie Hamilton and Mark Giordano each had two assists.

Coming off a 7- 3 loss Wednesday night at Vegas with David Rittich in goal, the Flames snapped a three- game losing streak and improved to 9- 3-1 in their last 13 road games.

Derek Stepan and Kevin Connauton scored for Arizona. Off since beating Edmonton 1- 0 in a Saturday matinee at Gila River Arena, the NHL- worst Coyotes had won four straight and were 5- 0- 1 in their last six.

Called up from Stockton of the AHL with former Coyotes goalie Mike Smith sidelined by a lower- body injury, Gillies made his third appearance of the season and fourth overall in the NHL. OILERS 3, AVALANCHE 2 (OT) » Connor McDavid scored at 2:19 of overtime and had an assist to lead host Edmonton past Colorado. Leon Draisaitl had a goal and set up McDavid’s winner. Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, who won for just the second time in their last nine games. Samuel Girard and Colin Wilson scored for the Avalanche.

STARS 2, KINGS 0 » Things did not go well for the Kings in their first game back after a seven- game trip as Tyler Seguin scored his 30th goal of the season at 11:33 of the third period and Alexander Radulov added an empty- net goal with time winding down to lift Dallas to a victory in Los Angeles. The Kings had their three- game winning streak snapped. LIGHTNING 4, SENATORS 3 » Nikita Kucherov had two assists to reach 80 points this season and visiting Tampa Bay defeated Ottawa. Tyler Johnson, Victor Hedman, Vladislav Namestniko­v and Brayden Point scored for the Lightning (41-17- 3), who leapfrogge­d expansion Vegas to regain the top spot in the overall NHL standings with 85 points. Louis Domingue earned his third win by stopping 33 shots. WILD 4, DEVILS 2 » Joel Er- iksson Ek and Chris Stewart scored in a 39- second span during Minnesota’s three- goal second period, and the Wild rallied from two down to beat New Jersey in Newark, N. J. Wild defenseman Mike Reilly also scored in the second period and Eric Staal iced the game with an emptynet goal, his 900th NHL point. The Wild moved into third place in the Central Division after winning for the 11th time in 17 games (11- 3- 3). FLYERS 2, BLUE JACKETS 1 » Petr Mrazek showed just why the Flyers traded for him. Mrazek made 19 saves in his Philadelph­ia debut and Nolan Patrick scored the go- ahead goal midway through the third period, leading the Flyers to a victory over visiting Columbus. DEVILS TRADE WITH RIVAL RANGERS » The New Jersey Devils acquired speedy winger Michael Grabner from the New York Rangers in the first trade between the cross- river rivals. New Jersey sends a 2018 second- round draft pick and 20- year- old defensive prospect Yegor Rykov to New York. The teams announced the deal Thursday night. These teams had not completed a swap in the 35 years since the Devils franchise moved to New Jersey from Colorado. PANTHERS HONOR VICTIMS OF SCHOOL SHOOTING » The Florida Panthers honored victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with a somber video tribute before their game against the Washington Capitals in Sunrise, Fla. The arena video screen Thursday night showed the names and faces of each of the 17 students who were killed on Valentine’s Day in nearby Parkland. The darkened ice was then illuminate­d with 17 circles of light, with a student’s name inside each one.
