Stanford, Cal well-represente­d at NCAA indoor meet

Nine Stanford athletes and two relay teams, and five individual­s from Cal will participat­e at the twoday NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championsh­ips, which begin today at Texas A&M’s Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas.

This is the most individual entrants for both the Cardinal and Golden Bears since 2012 championsh­ips.

For Stanford, 24 athletes made the trip in all, including relay members and alternates.

Stanford’s distance medley relay teams are both top- 5 seeds entering the event. The Cardinal women are No. 3, the men are seeded No. 5.

Stanford has three indi- vidual No. 3 seeds: Grant Fisher in the men’s 3,000, Elise Cranny in the women’s mile, and Lena Giger in the women’s shot put.

Stanford’s other individual competitor­s are: Valarie Allman (women’s weight throw), Christina Aragon (women’s 3,000 meters), Olivia Baker (women’s 800 meters), Vanessa Fraser (women’s 3,000 meters), Fiona O’Keeffe (women’s 3,000 meters) and Steven Fahy, (men’s 5,000 meters).

For the Bears, Ashtyn Davis (men’s 60 meter hurdles), Tuomas Kaukolahti (men’s triple jump), McKay Johnson (men’s shot put), Bethan Knights (women’s 5,000 meters) and Lauren Martinez (women’s pole vault) will compete.

Golf

CAL’S MORIKAWA MOVES UP » Cal junior Collin Morikawa moved up three spots to No. 2 on the latest watch list of 20 golfers for the 201718 Fred Haskins Award, considered the “Heisman of Golf.” It’s the oldest college golf award dating back to 1971 is given annually to the Most Outstandin­g Collegiate Golfer of the Year as voted by Division I players, coaches and select golf media

Voting will open at the end of the NCAA Regionals and run through the end of the NCAA Championsh­ips.

Morikawa ranks behind only USC’s Justin Suh.

“It’s a great feeling to move up to No. 2,” Morikawa said. “Justin (Suh) has played amazing this year and there are many other great guys playing well during this time. However, we still have a few tournament­s left in the spring until postseason, somy main focus is getting the team back to NCAA regionals and nationals, and then see what happens from there.”

Swimming

SPARTANS FIFTH » The San Jose State women team is tied for fifth out of 49 teams after the first day at the CSCAA (College Swimming and Diving Coaches Associatio­n of America) National Invitation­al at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Brittany Heng led the way placing third in the 50 freestyle. Heng also swam on the Spartans’ 200 free- style relay team that finished fifth and the 400 medley relay team that was fourth.

Colleen Humel swam the opening leg in both relays and finished eventh in the 200 individual medley.

Baseball

CARDINAL FALL SAT TEXAS » No. 7 Stanford’s comeback fell short in an 8- 6 loss at No. 23 Texas to open a fourgame series.

The Cardinal (11-2) was led by Maverick Handley and Kyle Stowers, who had two RBI apiece. Handley’s came via a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. USF FLEXES POWER IN LOSS » Thomas McCarthy hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs overall, but USF opened its home series against Xavier with a 14- 6 loss.

Jonathan Allen hit a tworun homer for the Dons (66).

Softball

SJSU SWEEPS » San Jose State swept two games to open the 2018 Louisville Slugger Invitation­al.

Cassidy Clary and Georgia Blair drove in runs in the 10th as the Spartans (14-7) beat Boston University 5-3, and SJSU scored 14 runs in the final three innings — nine in the sixth — to rout Cal State Fullerton 15- 6 in six innings.

Brittany Abacherli hit a two-run homer and Clark had a three-run shot in the sixth as the Spartans broke what had been a 6- 6 tie.
