Montgomery has Tommy John surgery
Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery has undergone Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him until the second half of next season or possibly 2020.
Head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad operated Thursday at New YorkPresbyterian Hospital. The team announced the reconstructive operation repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament in Montgomery’s left elbow, consistent with a recent MRI. A loose bone chip also was removed.
Montgomery, who turns 26 in December, was 2- 0 with a 3.62 ERA in six starts after going 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 29 starts as a rookie last season. He left a May 1 outing againstHouston after one inning because of tightness in his elbow.
Right- hander Domingo German is 0- 3 with a 6.33 ERA in five starts since replacing Montgomery in New York’s rotation and is 0- 4 with a 5.44 ERA in 10 appearances overall. He is scheduled to pitch against Steven Matz (2- 4) in Saturday’s middle game of a three-game series against theMets at Citi Field.
Masahiro Tanaka ( 7-2) starts today’s opener against Jacob deGrom(4- 0), and Luis Severino (9-1) faces Noah Syndergaard (4-1) on Sunday night in a matchup of aces. GMDANIELS GETS EXTENSION
» The Texas Rangers have given general manager Jon Daniels a multiyear contract extension at a time when the team is focused on developing young players at the big league level.
Texas missed the playoffs last season and was 27- 37 going into Thursday night’s home game against defending World Series championHouston. But the Rangers have made their only two World Series appearances during Daniels’ 13 seasons as GM, and won four AL West titles.
“There is a definite sense of urgency, not for a quick fix by any stretch ... but a sense of urgency in everything that we do to make progress, to put building blocks in place and keep going,” Daniels said Thursday. “Our focus has been on just re- establishing a foundation for a long-term sustainable model to win here for a long time.”
Daniels’ contract had been scheduled to expire at the end of this season. He is also the team’s president of baseball operations.

Miller, 28, hit .256 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 48 games this season but struggled defensively at first base.
Tampa Bay announced Wednesday that the 22-year old Bauers, considered one of the Rays’ top offensive prospects, will be recalled from Triple-A Durham.
