Pop superstar Demi Lovato, who has battled substance abuse problems for years, apparently has fallen off the wagon.

She details the relapse, after a reported six years of sobriety, in an equally gorgeous and heartbreaking new song, “Sober,” which just might be the most striking work she’s ever recorded.

In the confessional piano ballad, Lovato sings: “I don’t know why I do it every, every, every time. Its only when I’m lonely. Sometimes I just want to cave in and I don’t want to fight.

“Mama, I’m sorry I’m not sober anymore. Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor. ... I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore.”

Yeah, like we said, it might just be the best song Lovato has ever recorded.

“Sober” represents the latest turn in what has been a lengthy battle for the 25-year-old Texan, who entered treatment in 2011 “where she was treated for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction” but later “relapsed after she left the treatment center, then entered a sober living facility for a year,” according to People magazine.

Lovato appears to confirm that this song is, indeed, addressing the current state of her sobriety in a tweet sent on June 21. The tweet contains the video for “Sober” with a comment that reads “My truth.”

The singer also addresses the fans, whomshe apparently feels like she has let down. “I’m sorry for the fans I lost who watched me fall again,” she sings. “I wanna be a role model, but I’m only human.” Near the conclusion of the track, Lovato also apologizes to herself. “I’m sorry that I’m here again. I promise I’ll get help. It wasn’t my intention. I’m sorry to myself.”

People magazine reported Thursday that Lovato’s friend Iggy Azalea announced that she was “proud” of her friend for sharing the difficult truth.

“Waking up listening to @ddlovato ‘sober,’ ” the rapper, 28, wrote on social media. “I’m proud of you for having the guts to reveal your truth to the world again. NOT. EASY.”
