Robertson, Cal’s top receiver, announces plans to transfer

Demetris Robertson, a former fivestar recruit who caught 50 passes as a freshman at Cal, is leaving the school because of “personal matters.”

Robertson announced his decision in a message Thursday morning on Twitter. He did not specify the nature of his personal matters. Robertson, a Georgia native, had 50 receptions for 767 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman playing in coach Sonny Dykes’ pass-happy offense. Dykes was fired after Robertson’s first year, replaced by Justin Wilcox.

Robertson played two games in 2017, then missed the rest of the season after surgery for a lower body injury that had hampered him as a freshman.

TROTZ GOES FROMCUP TO ISLANDERS » The New York Islanders have hired Barry Trotz as their new head coach. President of hockey operations Lou Lamoriello announced the move at the NHL draft, two weeks after Trotz won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals and three days after he resigned from that job. Trotz reportedly agreed to a five-year deal worth double what he would have made annually on a shorter contract with the Capitals.

Hiring Trotz is an attempt to keep face- of-the-franchise center John Tavares, who can become a free agent July 1.

BAD SKATING JUDGES » The Internatio­nal Skating Union says competitio­ns at February’s Olympics were marred by biased judging in favor of China, the next Winter Olympic host nation. An ISU investigat­ion found Chinese judges Chen Weiguang and Huang Feng guilty of boosting Chinese skaters’ marks. Huang was banned for a year, while Chen is suspended for two years and banned from judging the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

SPIETH STAYS OUT FRONT » Jordan Spieth has no idea what it is like to play from behind at the Travelers Championsh­ip. The defending champion led after every round last year in his first visit to TPC RiverHighl­ands in Cromwell, Connecticu­t, and shot a 7-under 63 to match Zach Johnson for the first-round lead.

Rory McIlroy missed a 13-foot putt for par on the final hole that would have given hima share of the lead and finished in a three-way tie for third place with Brian Harmon and Peter Malnati. Brooks Koepka followed his second straight U.S. Open victory with a 68.

FEDERER TURNS BACK MATCH POINTS » Defending champion Roger Federer overcame two match points against Benoit Paire to reach the quarterfin­als of the Gerry Weber Open with a 6-3, 3- 6, 7- 6 (7) win in Halle, Germany. Federer skipped the entire claycourt season and is nowjust fourwins away from matching Jimmy Connors’ all-time record of 174 victories on grass. DJOKOVIC TOPS DIMITROV » Novak Djokovic eased past second- seeded Grigor Dimitrov at London’s Queen’s Club with a 6- 4, 6-1 win. Djokovic, who accepted a wild card into the Wimbledon warmup, had little trouble against the 2014 champion andadvance­d to the quarterfin­als. Nick Kyrgios sent down 32 aces as the Australian followed up his win over Andy Murray by beating seventh- seeded Kyle Edmund 7- 6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-3.

STANFORD’S ALL MAN WINS U.S. DISCUS » Stanford’s Valarie Allman won the women’s discus at the U. S. Outdoor Track and Field Championsh­ips. Allman threw 208 feet, 6 inches to win by a commanding eight feet at Des Moines, Iowa. In the decathlon, Harrison Williams, a junior, is third after the first day. In the men’s 1,500 first round, reigning NCAA 5,000 champ Sean McGorty qualified (3:41.43) for Saturday’s final. In the women’s 800, Olivia Baker advanced to the Friday’s semifinals. She was third in her heat, earning the final automatic qualifying spot in that race, running 2:02.49, and was fifth overall.

Inthemen’s 10,000final, alum Garrett Heath was fifth in 29:09.15. And in the women’s 10,000 final, alum Jessica Tonn placed 11th in 32:47.29.

Keturah Orji, a recent Georgia grad, set a meet record in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 10 ½ inches. Mike Rodgers set a record for 2018 in the 100 meters at 9.89 seconds in an opening round heat, just 0.04 seconds shy of his personal best. Molly Huddle won the women’s 10,000 for a record fourth straight time, while Lopez Lomong took the men’s 10,000 in 28.58.38.

College baseball

FLORIDA KNOCKS OUT TEXAS TECH » JJ Schwarz hit a two-run homer, and Florida built enough cushion to survive Texas Tech’s six-run outburst over the seventh and eighth innings and eliminate the Red Raiders from the College World Series with a 9- 6 win in Omaha, Nebraska. The Gators have won two straight following a loss to Tech in their opener and moved to the Bracket 2 final against Southeaste­rn Conference rival Arkansas.
