Snedeker just misses PGA Tour record with 11-under 59

Brandt Snedeker predicted low scores at the Wyndham Championsh­ip but not this low.

Snedeker shot an 11-under 59 on Thursday, falling one shot shy of matching the PGA Tour record. He made a 20-foot putt on his final hole to become the 10th player in tour history to break 60. Jim Furyk set the record with a 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championsh­ip in 2016.

The round gave Snedecker a four- stroke lead after one round in Greensboro, N. C. Ryan Moore and John Oda shot 63s.

Isaiah Saldinda of San Francisco will face William Gordon of North Carolina in the U. S. Amateur quarterfin­als at Pebble Beach, afte the field was reduced to eight. Texas teen Cole Hammer, 18, won two matches to advance. to the U. S. Amateur quarterfin­als. The co-medalist will face England’s Alex Fitzpatric­k in the quarterfin­als. In the other quarterfin­als, Davis Riley of Hattiesbur­g, Miss., will play Devon Bling of Ridgecrest; and Austin Squires of Union, Ky., will meet Viktor Hovland of Norway.

SAN JOSE SPORTS HALL OF FAME » Three former San Jose State stars, including sports sociology pioneer Dr. Harry Edwards, and all-time Sharks great Evgeni Nabokov will be new inductees into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.

Edwards and Nabokov, along with former All- Star pitcher Mark Langston and six- time LPGA tournament winner Pat Hurst will be honored at a Nov. 14 ceremony at SAP Center.

BRADY LEADS PATRIOTS » Tom Brady moved the New England Patriots with ease in their Super Bowl rematch against the penalty-prone Eagles, winning 3720 with a little help from running back James White and fifth-round draft choice Ja’Whaun Bentley.

In his first action since losing in the NFL title game to Philadelph­ia, Brady completed 19 of 26 passes for 172 yards and two touchdown.

Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury after a strip sack that Bentley recovered and ran 54 yards for a touchdown.

Sam Darnold threw an intercepti­on and showed some of the growing pains of a rookie quarterbac­k in his first preseason start for New York, which lost 15-13 to Washington on a lastsecond field goal by Dustin Hopkins. Alex Smith was 4 of 6 for 48 yards in one series. ... Aaron Rodgers needed just one drive to look at home in his first action at Lambeau Field in almost a year, connecting with tight end Jimmy Graham for an 8-yard score, and Tramon Williams had a 25-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of Green Bay’s 51-34 win over the Steelers.

NASCAR’S KAHNE TO QUIT RACING FULL-TIME » NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne said he is retiring from full-time racing.

Kahne, 38, announced his intentions on Twitter, saying, “I’m not sure what the future holds forme, but I’m at ease with the decision that I have made.”

The former Hendrick Motorsport­s driver has 18 victories in 15 years in the Cup Series, including a playoff- clinching one last season at Indianapol­is Motor Speedway.
