Young confirms marriage to Hannah. A2
Two months after rumors circulated that Neil Young had wed Daryl Hannah in a small private ceremony, the singer confirmed the marriage in a very appropriate way for the politically active couple.
The 72- year- old Bay Area singer-songwriter referred to the actress, 57, as “my wife Daryl” in a note on his website this week. The politically themed note urges fans to vote in the midterm elections and to support the efforts of young people to demand commonsense gun laws.
The note comes with a video that features a live version of Young performing the 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song “Ohio.” The note explains that the song was written following the killing of four students at Kent State University by members of the Ohio National Guard.
The guard had opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War. “With no real laws protecting us from guns, and with politicians supporting the NRA, because the NRA supports them, we are not well represented,” Young’s note reads. “Today’s students are brave, demanding change in turbulent times.”
Young then said he and “my wife Daryl” put together the video in support of today’s students. Young is referring to the Parkland, Florida, students who launched the #NeverAgain movement and the March for Our Lives demonstrations following the deaths of 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February. “We stand with them,” Young’s note reads. “They are us. We are them.”
That Young and Hannah would unite on such a cause isn’t unusual, given that they share a passion for political and environmental causes. They began dating in 2014 after Young divorced his wife of 37 years, Pegi Young, a singer-songwriter and activist who runs the Bridge School for kids with severe speech and physical impairments in Hillsborough.
Together, Young and the “Splash” actress led a march in Washington, D.C., in April 2014 to urge the Obama administration to reject the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.
News of their wedding began circulating in late August when friends and fans of the rocker and the actress congratulated them on social media.
The Mirror reported that the couple married in front of close friends in a ceremony in Atascadero, in San Luis Obispo County, following an earlier ceremony in the San Juan islands in Washington aboard his yacht.
