Among festival shooter’s belongings — semi-automatic assault rifle, passport

Gilroy Garlic Festival killer Santino Legan had a second semi-automatic assault rifle at his home and left an open bottle of Jack Daniels, a clown mask, passport and checkbooks among dozens of other items in his car found parked near the festival grounds, according to a search warrant.

The search warrant offers glimpses into Legan’s final days in Gilroy, but no further insights into the “fractured ideology” that may have propelled him on July 28 to fatally shoot three people and injure 13 others at the festival that was the defining event of his hometown.

Though “books and literature” were found in the 19-year-old’s Honda Accord, the warrant does not specify whether they are similar in content to the reading materials and white supremacist literature reportedly seized from his

apartment in Walker Lake, Nevada.

The warrant reveals Legan spent the days leading up to the festival purchasing equipment and clothing that he would use in his shooting rampage that Sunday. Receipts show Legan purchased a flashlight and elbow and knee pads from Big Sporting Goods that Thursday, as well as ear plugs from Best Buy and camouflage pants from Nike. The pants “were reported to be worn by a possible second suspect,” the warrant said, but authorities have said that they believe Legan acted alone, and camouflage pants were also recovered from Legan’s car.

The receipts and bags from Legan’s shopping trips were located in the upper southwest bedroom of the house, while the camouflage bag containing the semiautomatic rif le and magazines — holding 29, 31 and 29 rounds, respectively — were found in the master bedroom. The warrant does not specify who owned the guns.

After he died, Legan was found with an “AK- 47 style” assault rifle strapped around his body, according to the search warrant. Gilroy police initiially said its officers killed Legan in a gun battle, but the coroner’s report concluded he killed himself with a shot from the assault rifle.

In Legan’s car, authorities also found assorted paperwork, including a passport and a Gilroy Garlic Festival pamphlet, camping gear and evidence that Legan may have been planning a larger attack: a shotgun, ammunition and four bottle rockets, as well as camping gear including: gear boots, binoculars, a first aid kit and wilderness training manual, a Hyper Tough organizer pouch, an Attwood signal horn, a Leatherman tool, and a camo pack with a fire shelter tent.

The 19-year-old’s car also contained an open bottle of Jack Daniels, a thumb drive and two hard drives, checkbooks, a Sig Sauer BB gun, CO2 cartridges, ear plugs and a power drill.
