Rapinoe, Shields named Sportswome­n of the Year

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe and boxer Claressa Shields have been honored as Sportswome­n of the Year by theWomen’s Sports Foundation.

They won in the team and individual categories, the awards coming at the foundation’s 40th annual Salute to Women in Sports.

Rapinoe led the U. S. to victory at theWorld Cup in France and earned the FIFA Player of the Year award. Shields is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and middleweig­ht champion.

Sheila Johnson, partowner of the Washington Wizards, Capitals and recentWNBA championMy­stics, won the Billie Jean King Leadership Award.

THERIAULT TO MISS HOLLYWOOD 500 » Austin Theriault hasn’t been cleared by NASCAR’s medical team and won’t take part in Sunday’s Hollywood 400 at the Kansas Speedway, he announced on social media. Xfinity Series driver Garrett Smithley will take his place driving the No. 52 car for Rick Ware Racing.

Theriault was injured in a wreck on Monday at Talladega Superspeed­way in Alabama. Theriault is 35th in the NASCAR Cup standings. BOWYER RETURNING TO STEWARD- HAAS » Clint Bowyer has reached an agreement with StewartHaa­s Racing to return to the No. 14 Ford next season. Bowyer has been with SHR for three of his 15 seasons in the Cup Series.
