Baker meets again with Phillies

-

Former Giants manager Dusty Baker had his second interview for the Philadelphia Phillies’ managerial job, multiple media outlets reported Thursday.

Baker, 70, who interviewed with the Phillies on Wednesday, is considered one of the three finalists for the position along with Joe Girardi and Buck Showalter.

The Phillies fired Gabe Kapler on Oct. 10 after he compiled a 161-163 record without a postseason appearance in two seasons.

“They got a good team, great city, I’ve been coming here for years,” Baker told NBC Sports Philadelphia on Thursday. “The fans are great. So it’s a great place to possibly come and work.”

Girardi and Showalter are still expected to get second interviews with the Phillies.

Baker is a three-time NL Manager of the Year (1993, 1997, 2000) who posted a 1,863-1,636-1 record in 22 seasons with the San Francisco Giants (1993-2002), Chicago Cubs (2003- 06), Cincinnati Reds (2008-13) and Washington Nationals (2016-17).

Girardi, who turns 55 on Monday, led the New York Yankees to a 910-710 record and the 2009 World Series championship during a decade as the manager in the Bronx (2008-17). He was also the National League Manager of the Year during his lone season with the then-Florida Marlins in 2006.

Showalter, 63, is a threetime American League Manager of the Year (1994, 2004, 2014) with a 1,5511,517-1 record in 20 seasons as skipper with the Yankees (1992-95), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2000), Texas Rangers (2003- 06) and Baltimore Orioles (2010-18). ALCS » Astros manager AJ Hinch said before Game 4 of the American League Championshp Series on Thursday that he would remove his team from the field if fans at Yankee Stadium again threw objects at Houston players.

The Astros held a 2-1 series lead heading into the game. The Astros led 8-3 at the deadline for this newspaper.

Right fielder Josh Reddick said fans tossed water bottles, baseballs and other objects debris at him during Game 3 on Tuesday night.

“I will pull the team off the field if we get in that situation again where bottles are being thrown and balls are being thrown and it becomes unruly,” Hinch said Thursday before Game 4. “There’s other ways to support your home team, and this place does as good a job as anybody to trying to police that while also trying to create an environment that’s all pro Yankees. It would be a very ugly scene for baseball, a very ugly seen for the Yankees, if one of our guys was hit by something from the upper deck. Something tragic could happen and nobody wants that.”

New York fans erupted after a replay review changed Edwin Encarnación’s infield hit leading off the eighth to a groundout. Houston went on to win 4-1 and take a 2-1 lead in the best- of-seven series.

“I went out on the field the other day I wanted the umpires to know that it was becoming a dangerous situation,” Hinch said Thursday before game 4. “Our guys have reported both in the bullpen and in the outfield, you could see the stuff thrown on the field. There’s no place for that. Both teams will agree. And it’s really hard to stop fans from doing that. But it’s also very dangerous. MLB is aware. We’re aware.”

Reddick homered off Luis Severino in the second inning for a 2- 0 lead. Fans directed insults at him when he went to right

“You throw a baseball hard enough and hit somebody in the head when they’re not looking, it could do some damage to the player, so it’s definitely disrespectful and at the same time very unsafe,” Reddick said after the game. PADRES’ SEARCH DOWN TO TWO » The San Diego Padres’ search for a manager has narrowed to two candidates with Texas ties, according to multiple reports.

Former Rangers skipper Ron Washington and Jayce Tingler, the Rangers’ field coordinator in 2019, both have second interviews scheduled with Padres ownership.

Washington, 67, compiled a 664- 611 record in eight seasons with Texas (200714) and led the Rangers to back-to-back American League pennants in 2010-11. The former A’s coach spent the last three seasons as the third-base coach for the Atlanta Braves.
