It was a tough night in Madison Square Garden for Cal and Paris Austin, right, against Duke and Tre Jones. The top-ranked Blue Devils prevailed 87-52 on Thursday in the Empire Classic. Cal returns to the Garden today to face Texas.

Newcoach Mark Fox lost for the first time at Cal on Thursday as top-ranked Duke rolled over the Bears 87- 52 at Madison Square Garden.

The coach of the Blue Devils, Mike Krzyzewski, won his 217th game with Duke, matching John Wooden for the career coaching record of topranked teams.

Krzyzewski is 217- 34 when the Blue Devils hold the top spot, a mark they hit this week in The Associated Press poll. Wooden went 217-11 during his run at UCLA.

Krzyzewski can set the record tonight at Madison Square Garden if the Blue Devils (5- 0) knock off Georgetown in the final of the 2K Empire Classic. The Hoyas defeated No. 22 Texas 82- 66 in the opener.

The Bears (4-1) shot only 37% from the floor and failed to have a player score in double digits. D. J. Thorpe and Kareem South led the Bears with eight points. Cal takes on Texas today in the consolatio­n game.

Vernon Carey led Duke with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Carey scored 21 points in the first half, one point better than the best in his brief career, set a game earlier against Georgia State. EWING WINS BIG AGAIN AT MSG, HOYAS KNOCK OFF NO.
