Former commission­er Stern has surgery for brain hemorrhage

The NBA says former commission­er David Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage Thursday and had emergency surgery.

The league says in a statement its thoughts and prayers are with the 77-year- old Stern’s family.

Stern served exactly 30 years as the NBA’s longestten­ured commission­er before Adam Silver replaced him on Feb. 1, 2014. Stern has remained affiliated with the league with the title of commission­er emeritus and has remained active in his other interests, such as sports technology.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowsk­i reported Stern collapsed at a New York City restaurant and was rushed to the hospital. THE G LEAGUE IS GOING TO MEXICO » Commission­er Adam Silver announced that Capitanes — a Mexico City-based team from the top Mexican pro league — will be joining the G League starting with the 2020-21 season as the league’s 29th team.

The announceme­nt was made before the Mavericks beat the Pistons 122-111 in the first of two games in Mexico City this week.

It will not have affiliatio­n with an NBA franchise. Portland and Denver are the last two NBA teams without a G League affiliate. The other 28 have G League clubs. HEAT SUSPENDS WAITERS » Dion Waiters has been suspended yet again without pay by the Miami Heat, his third banishment of the season. The team made cited “his failure to adhere to team policies, violation of team rules and continued insubordin­ation” as the reasons. The move came only a few hours after Waiters had been ruled out of today’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers because of illness.
