Study says salaries, satisfaction, number of openings among determining factors
Everyone always wants to find the best job possible. And it goes without saying that some jobs are probably better than others.
Based on a handful of factors, Marin-based job recruiting and information site Glassdoor has come out with what it says are the 50 best jobs for 2020. According to the site, those factors that are more important than all others to job seekers are salary, the number of job openings and job satisfaction.
Glassdoor said it based its findings on the median base salaries for jobs reported on its site over the last year, the number of U.S. job openings on Glassdoor as of Dec. 18, 2019 and satisfaction reports filed on the Glassdoor site by company employees. Jobs had to have at least 100 salary reports and 100 satisfaction ratings to be eligible for the Glassdoor rankings.
And as far as best jobs go, the best of the best, according to Glassdoor, tend to be in the tech sector.
Topping Glassdoor’s rankings are front end engineers, those who work as web developers or designers who choose, install and also test a website’s user interface elements. One reason front end engineer comes on top of Glassdoor’s list is the job’s median base salary of $105,240.
Analyst Amanda Stansell said that in addition to front end engineer’s high salaries, the position gets high marks for having more than 13,000 current openings on Glassdoor’s site.
Front end engineer is followed at No. 2 by Java developer, with a median salary of $83,589. Data scientist, which has a median base salary of $107,801 a year, came in third place. Data scientist had been the No. 1 job on the Glassdoor list for the prior four years.
The rest of the jobs in Glassdoor’s top ten, and their median salaries, are product manager ($117,713), development and operations (devops) engineer ($107,310), data engineer ($102,472), software engineer ($105,563), speech language pathologist ($71,867), strategy manager ($133,067) and business development manager ($78,480). Altogether, Glassdoor said 20 of the 50 best jobs for 2020 are in the tech sector.
Glassdoor said that job seekers are also likely to find more competition for jobs in January, as 22% more job applications are started on the site than in any other month.
