1920: Babe Ruth hits his 50th career home run, his first as a Yankee, in 6-0 win over his former team, the Boston Red Sox.
1925: Jimmie Foxx makes his MLB debut at 17 for the Philadelphia A’s; collecting a pinch-hit single.
1926: Satchel Paige, at the age of 19, debuts in the Negro Southern League for Chattanooga
1940: The Summer Olympics scheduled for Helsinki are cancelled because of WWII
1948: Eddie Arcaro wins aboard Citation to become first four-time Kentucky Derby winner.
1951: Ninteen-year-old Mickey Mantle, in his 13th major league game, hits the first home run of his career for the New York Yankees. In the same game, 25-year-old Minnie Minoso, acquired days earlier in a trade from the Cleveland Indians, becomes the first black player in the history of the Chicago White Sox franchise. Minoso homered in his first at-bat.
1955: Babe Didrikson-Zaharias wins the Peach Blossom LPGA Tournament, the final victory before her death the following year
1969: Leonard Tose buys the Philadelphia Eagles for a thenprofessional sports record of $16.15 million.
1988: Michael Jordan of the Bulls scored 55 points in Game 2 against the Cavs after scoring 50 in Game 1, becoming the first player to score 50+ in consecutive playoff games.
1991: The Texas Rangers’ Nolan Ryan throws his record seventh no-hitter at the age of 44.
1992 : A’s outfielder Rickey Henderson steals his 1,000th career base.
1994: Three-time World Formula 1 Drivers champion Ayrton Senna crashes and is killed while leading the San Marino Grand Prix.
2000: The Giants’ Barry Bonds becomes the first player to hit a home run into the water at McCovey Cove.
2004: Bonds sets MLB record for being intentionally walked four times in nine-inning game.
2010: Calvin Borel, riding Super Saver, wins his third Kentucky Derby in four years.
2015: The Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez ties Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list when he hits number 660 against the Boston Red Sox.
