1941: Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak ends at 56 games. (Told you.)

1941: Daryle Lamonica, former Oakland Raiders quarterbac­k aka The Mad Bomber, is born in Fresno.

1956: Ted Williams hits his 400th career home run.

1960: Scott Norwood is born in Alexandria, Va., and grows up to miss a 46-yard field goal in the Super Bowl. (That was hardly a chipshot in 1991.)

1961: Ty Cobb dies of cancer at 74.

1966: Jim Ryun becomes the first American to hold the record in the mile since 1937, running it in 3:51.3 in a meet at Cal.

1969: Jim Kaat, Gold Glove winner for seven straight years, makes three errors. And he still wins the game.

1974: Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in major league history with 3,000 strikeouts, joining Walter

1974: Jay Hanna “Dizzy” Dean, pitcher (St Louis Cards), dies of a heart attack in Reno, Nev., at 63. 1978: Doc Medich of the Texas Rangers saved the life of a 61-year-old fan who had a heart attack just before a scheduled game at Baltimore. Medich, a medical student, administer­ed heart massage until help arrived.

1983: Tom Watson wins his second straight and fifth career British Open title.

1990: The Minnesota Twins became the first team in major league history to pull off two triple plays in one game. (They set the bar even higher by losing the game 1-0.)

1994: Brazil wins a record fourth World Cup soccer title, taking the first shootout in championsh­ip game history over Italy.

2005: Tiger Woods wins the British Open, by five strokes, for his 10th career major.

2016: Henrik Stenson shoots an 8-under 63 to beat Phil Mickelson by three strokes, becoming the first man from Sweden to win the British Open.

2018: Liz Cambage of the Dallas Wings scores 53 points in a game, breaking the WNBA record.
