Vehicle strikes pedestrian­s; 1 dead

SANTA CLARA >> One pedestrian was killed and another injured Wednesday when they were hit by a vehicle in Santa Clara, police said.

The crash was reported at Montague Expressway and Mission College Boulevard at 4:45 p.m., said Assistant Police Chief Wahid Kazem of the Santa Clara Police Department.

Kazem said one of the pedestrian­s was pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner- Coroner’s Office will release the person’s identity once it has been confirmed and his or her next of kin is notified.

An update on the condition of the second pedestrian was not available.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigat­ion, Kazem said. It was not immediatel­y known whether alcohol, drugs or distracted driving played a role in the collision.

The roadway remained closed for the investigat­ion until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Kazem said.
