SAN JOSE >> A man who reportedly threatened people with a handgun and then holed up in a West San Jose apartment was taken into custody Thursday after an overnight standoff with police, authorities said.

Officers got a call after midnight to an apartment complex on Saratoga Avenue south of Blackford Avenue for a report that a man “brandished a handgun at multiple people,” San Jose police Sgt. Christian Camarillo said.

When officers went to the site, the armed man barricaded himself inside his apartment on the grounds, Camarillo said. That prompted a roughly 90-minute period in which police were seen using a public- address system to coax the man to come outside and surrender. Eventually, the MERGE unit, SJPD’s version of a SWAT team, was summoned to the scene. At some point, it was described as having lobbed several flash-bang or stun grenades into the man’s apartment.

Sometime around 2 a.m., officers were seen taking the man away from the complex, allowing on-scene medics to treat him, then driving him away.

San Jose police released no additional details Thursday morning other than to say their investigation is ongoing.
