Ryan shares how Giants trainer saved wife’s life

- News services

Giants safety Logan Ryan told an incredible story on this week about how a Giants trainer’s advice may have saved Ryan’s wife’s life this week.

Ryan’s wife Ashley was flying to Florida to vote on Monday night when she began experiencing extreme stomach pains. She told her husband about it on the phone around 1 a.m. Tuesday, as Ryan was leaving MetLife Stadium after the team’s loss to the Bucs.

Ashley was going to try to sleep it off, but when Ryan told Giants assistant athletic trainer Justin Maher about his wife’s symptoms, Maher insisted she go to the emergency room immediately.

And that advice led to emergency surgery that likely saved her life. Doctors found an ectopic pregnancy, which can lead to life- threatening internal bleeding.

“My wife ended up going to the ER, and they ended up catching an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg was in the wrong place in the Fallopian tube and it was about to burst,” an emotional Ryan said on a Zoom call. “So she ended up going through the emergency surgery and they ended up saving her and preventing a lot of what could have happened. And that was a trainer on our team Justin Maher telling my wife to go to the ER at 1 a.m., could have saved her life or a lot of internal bleeding there. And that’s the type of organization we have here.” COVID-19 CONCERNS >> The Texans will be without three linebackers Sunday against the Jaguars after linebacker Jacob Martin tested positive for COVID-19. The team learned that Martin tested positive for the virus Wednesday and shut down the facility Thursday. Martin was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday.

Wednesday’s positive test came after the team had to shut down the facility during last week’s bye after offensive lineman Max Scharping tested positive for the virus.

• The Bears closed their facilities after a player tested positive for COVID-19. Chicago, already in the NFL’s “intensive protocol” after offensive lineman Jason Spriggs tested positive earlier in the week, said they were notified on Thursday of another positive test involving a player.

The latest player to test positive was center Cody Whitehair. Right guard Germain Ifedi has been in quarantine as a close contact with Spriggs.

• The Chiefs closed their facility after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder was that staff member who tested positive.

Later Thursday, Kansas City placed standout defensive tackle Chris Jones on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Jones was a limited participant in practice for reasons that weren’t related to an injury. The move doesn’t necessarily mean Jones (team-best 4.5 sacks) tested positive. MURRAY, TAGOVAILOA TANGLE AS CARDS HOST DOLPHINS >> Former first-round picks Kyler Murray ( No. 1 overall in 2019) and Tua Tagovailoa ( No. 5 this year) will be on the marquee Sunday when they meet in Glendale, Arizona.

Murray will lead the Cardinals (5-2), and Tagovailoa will start for the visiting Dolphins (4-3) in a battle between two of the NFL’s most-hyped young quarterbacks.

Both QBs wear jersey No. 1, and they have similar frames: Murray at 5-feet10, 207 pounds; and Tagovailoa at 6- 0, 217.

The last — and only — time they have met on the field was on Dec. 29, 2018. Ta gov a i loa’s A labama Crimson Tide beat Murray’s Oklahoma Sooners, 45-34, in a College Football Playoff semifinal in the Orange Bowl.

JETS’ DARNOLD SITS OUT PRACTICE >> Sam Darnold’s sore shoulder is keeping him out of practice. The Jets remain optimistic the quarterback will play Monday night.

Coach Adam Gase said the 0-8 Jets are giving Darnold an extra day of rest as the team prepares to host the AFC East- rival New England Patriots.
