Finally able to play, Utes roll past Huskies

Alfonso Plummer scored 21 points, Timmy Allen added 14, and Utah used an 18- 0 run midway through the second half to pull away for a 76- 62 win over Washington on Thursday in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools.

Utah finally got on the court after having several early- season games canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the program. Despite no games and a lack of practice time, the Utes looked just fine rolling in their season opener in Salt Lake City.

Mikael Jantunen added 10 points as the Utes shot nearly 52% in the second half. Utah had 21 assists on 28 made field goals and scored 23 points off Washington turnovers.

Quade Green tied his career high with 21 points, but

the Huskies (0-3) continued to struggle at the offensive end. Washington has shot under 40% in all three of its games. Nate Roberts added 12 points and 13 rebounds. UCONN 61, USC 58 >> James Bouknight scored a gamehigh 18 points, and the Huskies (3- 0) survived an offensive drought in the final 71/2 minutes to hold off the Trojans (3-1) in the Legends Classic at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticu­t.

UConn managed just three points during the final 7:30, but the Trojans managed only four points during the same stretch, missing 12 of their final 13 shots.

UCLA 78, SEATTLE 52 >> Tyger Campbell scored 17 points, Jules Bernard added 16 points, and the Bruins (21) handled the Redhawks (3-2) in their home opener. UCLA began pulling away with a 14- 0 run to close the half and take a 43-29 lead at the break.

Campbell scored five points and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added four in the spurt.

Women

NO. 8 N.C. STATE 54, NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 46 >> The top-ranked Gamecocks saw their winning streak end at 29 games with the loss in Columbia. The Gamecocks (3-1) trailed 36-33 entering the fourth quarter but took a 44- 43 lead on a jumper from Aliyah Boston with 5:10 remaining.

However, NC State (3- 0) responded with an 11-2 run to end the game.

This paves the way for Stanford to be the new No. 1 team when the poll is released Monday.

NO. 17 OREGON STATE 89, USF 80 >> Freshman Sasha Goforth and Taylor Jones combined for 31 of their 43 points in the second half when the Beavers came alive to beat the Dons (02) in Corvallis. The Beavers trailed by 12 points late in the first half and 43-35 at the break before scoring the first eight points of the second half and turning that into a 13-2 run to grab the lead.
