Diamondbacks star Marte hits the injured list
Infielder/outfielder Ketel Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, a day after hurting his right hamstring against the Colorado Rockies.
Arizona recalled Andrew Young, who had been with its taxi squad.
Marte was injured in the sixth inning of the Diamondbacks’ 8-0 loss. He grabbed the back of his right hamstring while running to first base after hitting a grounder to third and had to be helped off the field.
Manager Torey Lovullo says Marte likely will get an MRI when the team returns home.
“There’s some soreness there; there are some things that we expected,” Lovullo said.
Marte was hitting .462 with two home runs in the first six games.
He was an All-Star in 2019 when he hit .329 with 32 homers and 92 RBIs.
METS’ BETANCES GOES ON IL >> New York Mets reliever Dellin Betances was placed on the 10day injured list with a right shoulder impingement.
New York selected right-hander Trevor Hildenberger to the major league roster. Hildenberger pitched for Minnesota from 201719, going 9-11 with a 5.35 ERA in 132 relief outings, but hasn’t appeared in the majors since.
The oft-injured Betances made his season debut Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to the Phillies. The 6-foot-8, 265-pound right-hander gave up one run with a walk and a strikeout in one inning of work. He did not allow a hit, but threw only nine of 21 pitches for strikes.
A four-time All-Star with the crosstown Yankees, the 33-year-old Betances has been a big disappointment since signing with the Mets as a free agent in December 2019. He struggled with his control during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 15 appearances. He walked 12 and struck out 11 in 11 2/3 innings.
After the season, Betances exercised his $6 million player option for this year, deciding against taking a $3 million buyout.
WHITE SOX’S HAMILTON OUT >> Chicago White Sox outfielder Billy Hamilton was put on the 10day injured list with a strained left hamstring.
Hamilton sustained the injury after stealing third base during the fifth inning of Wednesday’s 8-4 loss against Seattle. He scored on Yasmani Grandal’s bases-loaded walk before being replaced by Andrew Vaughn in left field.
Hamilton is batting .273 with one RBI and two runs scored in six games this season.
The loss of Hamilton is another setback to an ailing outfield, which is also without Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) and Adam Engel (hamstring).
