A's finalize reshaped Opening Day roster after active offseason

- — By Alex Simon asimon@bayareanewsgroup.com

The Oakland A's finalized their 2022Opening Day roster on Thursday, a day before they start the season in Philadelphia.

The turnover within a single year is rather stunning to consider, in totality: Only nine players from their initial 2021 roster are in the 2022starting group, even with two extra roster spots this year.

Oakland traded away four star players: third baseman Matt Chapman, first baseman Matt Olson and starting pitchers Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea. They also let several players leave as free agents, most notably outfielders Mark Canha and Starling Marte.

Of the 13pitchers the A's carried on their initial 26-man roster in 2021, only three remain: Opening Day starter Frankie Montas, left-handed starter Cole Irvin and closer Lou Trivino.

It's only slightly better on the position-player side, as six players remain a year later: infielders Elvis Andrus, Jed Lowrie, Chad Pinder and Tony Kemp, outfielder Stephen Piscotty and catcher Sean Murphy. Ramón Laureano will miss the first 27 games of 2022 as he completes an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.
