Cabrera at 2,999 hits after intentiona­l walk

Miguel Cabrera was intentiona­lly walked in the eighth inning with 2,999 career hits, setting off a loud chorus of boos at Comerica Park as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 3-0 Thursday.

Cabrera was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, forcing him and Detroit fans to wait at least another day for him to hit the 3,000 mark.

Detroit led 1-0 and had runners at second and third with two outs in the eighth when New York manager Aaron Boone gave Cabrera the free pass. Austin Meadows then hit a two-run double to put Detroit up by three.

Michael Pineda (1-0) gave up three hits over five innings in his Detroit debut. TWINS 1, ROYALS 0 >> Joe Ryan (2-1) pitched six innings of two-hit ball, Miguel Sano drove in the game's only run and visiting Minnesota held on to avoid a series sweep.

BLUE JAYS 3, RED SOX 2 >>

Kevin Gausman (1-1) took a shutout into the ninth, and Jordan Romano escaped with a save in Boston. Gausman struck out eight and walked none and was pulled after allowing Trevor Story's single to lead off the ninth.

MARLINS 5, CARDINALS 0 >>

Pablo López (2-0) pitched three-hit ball over seven dominant innings for the Marlins in Miami. Jesús Sánchez and Jazz ChisholmJr. homered for the Marlins.

GUARDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 3 >> Josh Naylor had two hits and two RBIs, continuing his comeback from a devastatin­g leg injury and helping the Guardians cap a series sweep in Cleveland.

BAUER'S LEAVE EXTENDED >> Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer's administra­tive leave has been extended by an additional week, through April29, by MLB and the players' union. Bauer was placed on seven days' paid leave July 2 under the joint domestic violence and sexual assault policy of MLB and the union after a woman said he choked her into unconsciou­sness, punched her repeatedly and had anal sex with her without her consent during two sexual encounters earlier last year. MLB and the union have since agreed to 13 extensions. BOSTON'S CORA TESTS POSITIVE >> Boston manager Alex Cora tested positive for COVID-19 and did not manage Thursday's loss to Toronto in Boston. Cora will not travel to Florida for the weekend series versus Tampa Bay.
