Police track suspect in Fremont fatal shooting to Oakland home
Another suspect was arrested in the incident's aftermath Tuesday
FREMONT >> Two suspects were arrested — one near the scene, another a day later, in another East Bay city — after the fatal shooting of a man Tuesday night, police said Thursday.
The name and age of the man killed were not released as of Thursday afternoon. Police so far have not said if the suspects knew the victim or what the motive was for the killing.
The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of Medina Common. Police responded to a disturbance complaint and reports of shots fired and found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release.
Despite lifesaving measures by Fremont fire medical personnel, the man died at the scene. Police located and interviewed potential witnesses to the shooting.
A short time later, 25-year-old Nyla Turner of Fremont was arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, the release said.
Authorities did not specify the role Turner allegedly played in the killing.
Police identified 26-yearold Darreis Buckley of Oakland as the primary suspect. He tentatively was identified based on witness statements, surveillance footage and additional evidence, authorities said in the release.
In the aftermath of the shooting, he was able to escape the area in a vehicle before police arrived.
The investigation led authorities to Oakland on Wednesday, the release said.
A “vehicle of interest” was located near the 1000 block of 16th Street in West Oakland; Fremont officers began surveillance.
Oakland police were called to the area, and soon after Buckley exited a residence about 1:50 p.m. he was arrested on suspicion of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Both Turner and Buckley were being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail. The link between them was not clear Thursday.
The case against Buckley and Turner will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's
Office for charging today, when they are scheduled to be arraigned.
Detectives still actively are investigating the killing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Paiva at 790-6900 or at mpaiva@fremont.gov.
