Man sentenced to 10 years after killing another driver while on fentanyl following police pursuit
Matthew Todd Fredricksen, 34, T-boned another vehicle during chase
SAN BRUNO >> A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday, more than a year after he killed another driver following a police pursuit in San Bruno, according to prosecutors.
Matthew Todd Fredricksen, 34 of San Francisco pleaded no contest in October to felony charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of drugs and fleeing pursuing officers. The charges stemmed from an incident June 19 of last year, beginning around 10 p.m. at the Shops of Tanforan in San Bruno.
Fredricksen was the getaway driver in an alleged shoplifting incident. Police received reports of the shoplifting and saw the suspect vehicle pull out of the parking lot; they attempted to pull Fredricksen over, but he fled, sparking a pursuit at high speeds, according to prosecutors.
Police eventually broke off the pursuit for safety reasons after Fredricksen drove 60 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone, prosecutors said.
Shortly after that, he ran through a red light, T-boning another vehicle and killing its driver, 59-year-old Mikhail Maalouli.
Fredricksen was arrested after a brief attempt to flee on foot.
Authorities said he had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his possession and fentanyl in his system during the pursuit.
On Monday, Fredricksen was sentenced to 10 years in state prison with nearly three years of credit for time already served. He also was ordered to pay thousands in fines, fees and restitution. He'll pay restitution to the victim's family in an amount to be determined later, prosecutors said.
