NHL talks show progress
Sides agree tomeet Wednesday after marathon session
Negotiations between the NHL and the locked- out players’ association lasted deep into Tuesday night and went well enough that the sides agreed to return to the bargaining table for more talks Wednesday.
Both sides kept details close to the vest after the meeting that lasted more than seven hours.
The marathon session— on Day 52 of the lockout — was held at an undisclosed location in New York, at request of the NHL, in order for the sides to be able to talk without any potential distractions.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and union special counsel Steve Fehr attended, as they did for a long session by themselves Saturday. They were joined by commissioner Gary Bettman, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, a handful of team owners, and 13 players.
Whether any of the games that have been called off through Nov. 30 can be rescheduled if an agreement is made soon hasn’t been determined. But the NHL has already said that a full 82- game season won’t be played.
Baseball
The players union concluded that Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera’s agents didn’t know about a scheme to create a phony website in a defense of his positive drug test but said they failed to properly manage the employees of the firm who tried to carry out the scheme.
Brothers Sam and Seth Levinson, the heads of ACES Inc., were looked into by the Major League Baseball Players Association after MLB’s investigations department discovered the attempt to concoct evidence. Cabrera was suspended 50 games in August after testing positive for testosterone.
Texas Rangers righthander Yu Darvish won’t pitch for Japan in the World Baseball Classic next spring, choosing instead to focus on preparing for his second major league season.
Colleges
Jahwan Edwards’ 15yard run with 1: 43 left propelled visiting Ball State ( 7- 3, 4- 2 Mid- American Conference) to a 34- 27 victory over No. 23 Toledo, ending the Rockets’ eight- game winning streak. Toledo ( 82, 5- 1) had waited 11 years to get back into the national rankings.
Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder said he expects quarterback Collin Klein to play Saturday against TCU. Klein missed most of the second half of last weekend’s victory over Oklahoma State with an undisclosed injury.
New Orleans will be the site of the new bowl game between the Southeastern Conference and Big 12. The game will still be called the Sugar Bowl and will be played in the Superdome. The agreement is for 12 years.
The NCAA suspended forward Hanner MosqueraPerea and center Peter Jurkin, two key freshmen on the No. 1 Indiana men’s basketball team, for the first nine games this season for receiving impermissible benefits.
Washington forward Shawn Kemp Jr. is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks after tearing the patella tendon in his right knee.
