Stanford baseball beats Texas

Bears win third straight; Broncos take Irish Classic

Stanford’s baseball team scored four runs in the second inning and fi ve in the sixth to beat Texas 10- 5 on Sunday in Austin, Texas.

The Cardinal fi nished the series 1- 2 after Sunday’s game was shortened to eight innings to accommodat­e Stanford’s travel plans.

Alex Blandino had three hits, including a two- run home run in the sixth for Stanford.

Cal ( 5- 2) won its third straight game of the Tiger Classic — an 83 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff in Auburn, Ala. Vince Bruno went 2 for 3 with a two- run homer in the first inning and four RBIs.

Santa Clara ( 5- 4) overcame an early four- run defi cit to beat Notre Dame 8- 7 in the title game of the Irish Classic in San Antonio. The Broncos’ Greg Harisis earned tournament MVP honors. He went 2 for 5 with two runs scored against the Irish.

San Jose State ( 2- 6) allowed 19 hits in a 10- 1 loss to UC Santa Barbara at Municipal Stadium.

Cal ( 7- 6) beat No. 25 Texas 5- 2 to finish the Mary Nutter Softball Classic in Cathedral City at 2- 2. Cheyenne Cordes went 1 for 2 with two runs and one RBI for Cal. Also, Stanford scored six runs in the eighth inning and beat Syracuse 11- 5. The Cardinal sent it to extra innings with three runs in the seventh. Stanford ( 14- 3) then lost to Tennessee 3- 1.

Jessica Garcia hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, leading San Jose State ( 10- 5) to a come- frombehind 5- 4 win over North Carolina in the Bank of Hawaii Invitation­al title game.

Santa Clara ( 0- 8) lost to Iowa State 3- 0 in the fi nal game of the Marriott Bronco Classic.

No. 3 Stanford routed No. 5 Florida 7- 0 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal’s three freshmen — Carol Zhao, Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle — all posted straight- set wins. The two teams have combined to win the last four NCAA titles.

Second- ranked Stanford beat No. 4 Cal 14- 8 in the third- place game of the UC Irvine women’s water polo tournament.

Randy Duarte, who was raised in San Jose and attended Blackford High, was named to the Iowa State athletic Hall of Fame. Duarte got a baseball scholarshi­p to Iowa State and was an AllAmerica­n in 1975.
