Couple takes a chance with Monopoly proposal
The giant Monopoly in the Park board in San Jose’s Discovery Meadow was the scene Saturday of a very special game — and a surprise marriage proposal.
Beckett Witzke, an actor and a big Monopoly fan, flew his girlfriend, Kellie Krumholz, to Silicon Valley from Minnesota on Friday night so they could play on the big board Saturday morning. Of course, Beckett had a lot more in mind.
During the course of the game, Kellie landed on the “Chance” space and was presented with a specially made, jumbo-size card with a unique message: “Take a chance on the railroad of life. Marry Beckett!” Onlookers at Discovery Meadow cheered and applauded when she said “Yes.”
After all that was out of the way, they finished their game, and Kellie — an admitted novice — got the best of her future husband. And not for the last time, I’m sure.
Jose Posadas, president of Friends of San Jose, tells me this is the first such request the group has received in its 10 years of facilitating games on the board. By the way, Friends of San Jose also has its 20th anniversary celebration planned for Sept. 16, an event it’s planning with the Silicon Valley Concierge Association. Stay tuned for details.
IT’LL BE DIVA-RIFFIC: Some of the best “divas” to grace South Bay theater stages will be performing together Sunday in a one-nightonly cabaret show fundraiser to support the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
Three of the women — Karen Welch DeHart, Molly Thornton Olivas and Karyn Rondeau — have been touched by the disease and will be walking a marathon the weekend of July 12. The show, co-sponsored by Tabard Theatre Company, will take place at Theater on San Pedro Square.

GREAT GRILLS: Santa Clara is going to be the barbecue capital of the Bay Area with the third annual Silicon Valley Barbecue Championships at the city’s Central Park on Friday and Saturday. The grilling extravaganza— presented by the city, the Santa Clara Rotary Club and the Kansas City Barbecue Society — will include live music, a food court featuring local residents, a backyard barbecue competition and more than 70 pro barbecue teams competing for the top prize.
