Man arrested after standoff with police

SAN JOSE — A man was arrested Tuesday morning after a standoff with police that lasted about eight hours and drew a SWAT team to McKee Road, according to police.

Officers responded to an apartment in the 2700 block of McKee near Capitol Avenue just after 4 a. m. after reports of a family disturbanc­e, according to San Jose police Officer Albert Morales.

The person who called police said a family member arrived at her apartment under the influence of drugs and/ or alcohol and refused to leave.

The caller said the man, identified by police as Tyrone Merrit Jr., was possibly in possession of a gun.

Officers arrived and made contact with the reporting party outside the apartment and again she confirmed Merrit was possibly in possession of a gun and refusing to leave her apartment.

Officers tried to call Merritt out of the apartment several times, but there was no response, Morales said. San Jose MERGE officers responded to the scene after several hours and got no response from Merritt.

At about 11: 24 a. m. Merritt exited the apartment and surrendere­d to officers without incident.

No injuries

Merrit was arrested and booked into the County Jail for an outstandin­g felony warrant and felony warrant for violation of parole.
